USER NOTES:
This dataset was automated from 1:2,000,000 scale maps so many of the schools are located in the wrong place. FGDL is looking for a larger scale dataset of school locations, if you know of such a dataset please contact the FGDL Data Manager at: data@fgdl.org The point coverage of school names and label point locations was derived from the USGS geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Many GNIS features were misplaced. Those falling outside their appropriate county were deleted, as well as those falling outside a 1000 meter buffer around the shoreline at a 1 : 100,000 scale. All names with type of feature designated as school were made into an ARC/INFO coverage using version 6.1.2 for VMS. This coverage was exported and ftp'd to a DEC/alpha system running ARC/INFO 6.1.2 then imported. The imported coverage was projected from from a Lambert Conformal Area to a Albers Equal Area Conic projection. Lambert X and Y coordinates were dropped and new x and y coordinates were added. The coverage was inserted into the state library.
