TITLE: GROUND WATER CONTAMINATION AREAS IN FLORIDA - OCTOBER 2010

Geodataset Name: GRNDWATR_CONTAM_OCT10
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polygon
Feature Count: 376
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains the Ground Water Contamination Areas statewide map showing the boundaries of delineated areas of known groundwater contamination in the State of Florida pursuant to Chapter 62-524, F.A.C., New Potable Water Well Permitting In Delineated Areas. 38 Florida counties have been delineated primarily for the agricultural pesticide ethylene dibromide (EDB), and to a much lesser extent, volatile organic and petroleum contaminants. This GIS layer represents approximately 427,897 acres in 38 counties in Florida that have been delineated for groundwater contamination. However, it does not represent all known sources of groundwater contamination for the state of Florida.

USER NOTES:
This data is provided 'as is'. GeoPlan relied on the integrity
of the original data layer's topology
This data is provided 'as is' by GeoPlan and is complete to our
knowledge.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.
Each Delineated Area is identified by a unique Zone ID. The Zone ID is made up of
the County Code number, the Contaminant Code number, Number of revisions, and
a three-digit value. To interpret the Zone ID: 1) The first 2 digits are the Florida
County Code number. 2) The next 2 digits are the contaminant code. If the
contaminant code value is between 1 and 9 it only uses one digit. If there is more
than one contaminant the code will be 99. 3) The next digit is the number of
revisions on this Zone ID. 4) The last three digits are a number ensuring the ZONE
ID is unique. Note: Contaminant codes are listed at the end of the Entity Attribute
section, under Entity and Attribute Overview.

This GIS layer is intended to be used by regulatory agencies issuing potable water
well construction permits in areas of ground water contamination to protect public
health and the ground water resource. Permitted water wells in these areas must
meet specific well construction criteria and water testing prior to well use. Other
users of this layer may use it as a screening tool for further investigation. This
dataset only indicates the presence or absence of specific groundwater
contaminants and does not represent all known sources of groundwater
contamination in the state of Florida.

This data is provided 'as is' and its horizontal positional accuracy
has not been verified by GeoPlan

This data is provided 'as is' and its vertical positional accuracy
has not been verified by GeoPlan

No constraint: Delineated areas are mapped and adopted by rule under Chapter 62
-524, G.A.C. *Note: This GIS layer does not represent all known sources of
groundwater contamination for the state of Florida.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
For HRS EDB wells, USGS 7.5" quadrangles were overlayed with 100 meter
UTM grids. The location of each contaminated well was digitized to the nearest
100 meters in the appropriate UTM projection. These points were then buffered by
1000-2000 feet. Site maps and plume models were transferred to 7.5" quads and
digitized on a Calcomp 9100 digitizer using ARC/INFO. The individual quad
coverages of buffered points were projected from UTM to Lambert using
ARC/INFO for VMS on a VAX. The coverages were then map joined, dissolved,
projected to Albers Equal Area Conic, and exported. The exported coverages were
ftp'd to a DEC/ALPHA UNIX system, imported using ARC/INFO 6.1.2 and inserted
into the quad library. In Spring '97 the data was converted from NAD27 to HPGN
using the projection command within ARC/INFO version 7.0.4. In Spring, 1999,
the shapefile of this dataset was inserted in Spatial Database Engine (SDE 3.0.2).

Utilized the Attribute Transfer Tool to update the geometry of ZONEID 55993078. The updated boundary is based on the scanned copy of: "Existing/Proposed Delineated Areas, Silvex Site, Zone ID# 55993078," map created by Tricia McClenahan, 05/04/2000. The scanned map was georeferenced and digitized at 1:2,400 scale. The boundary was then tentatively approved by Joe North and then approved for upload by David James 09/10/2010. Process Date: 20100917
(1)Attributes were aliased to give meaningful names, redundant attributes were removed, attribute values were standardized, and symbology was defined for this layer. (2) Metadata: Updated Contact person. Updated Time Period of Content. Added descriptive language to abstract, purpose, and supplementary information. Added tabular data describing contaminant codes. Process Date: 20101014
(1) Deleted 6 features that had geometry, but no attribution at all. (2) Deleted 6 additional features that had no contaminant codes listed: ZONEID: 42003690 53003411 53003412 53003453 53003469 28003717 Process Date: 20101015
Updated layer obtained from WRM and inserted in ArcSDE. Data published in DataCatalog, DataMiner and published in MapDirect. Process Date: 20101028
The GeoPlan Center downloaded the Ground Water Contamination Areas dataset on August 1st, 2018 from the FDEP Data Portal: Florida Department of Environmental Protection Geospatial Open Data: http://geodata.dep.state.fl.us/ http://geodata.dep.state.fl.us/datasets/ground-water-contamination-areas Please Note: Data is also available via the FTP website: http://publicfiles.dep.state.fl.us/otis/gis/data/ground_water_contamination.zip GROUND_WATER_CONTAMINATION.zip GROUND_WATER_CONTAMINATION.gdb The GDB layer was exported to shapefile. The dataset's projection was redefined to FGDL Albers. During the QA/QC process the following tasks were undertaken: - Redefined the dataset's projection from FDEP Albers to FGDL Albers. - Uppercased all records in the table. - A DESCRIPT field was added based on "GROUND WATER CONTAMINATION AREA" & ZONE_ID. - A FGDLAQDATE field was added based on date downloaded from source. - Renamed file from GROUND_WATER_CONTAMINATION to GRNDWATR_CONTAM_OCT10. Process Date: 20180808
Dataset copied. Process Date: 20180828
