FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2006

TITLE: FLORIDA COASTLINE

Geodataset Name: COAST_FEB04
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polyline
Feature Count: 17879
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This GIS data set represents the Florida shoreline as lines. Initially digitized in 1990 by USFWS under FWRI contract, the data set was created from the most current National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Nautical Charts available at the time. The scale of the source charts varied from 1:10,000 in some harbors to 1:80,000 in the Big Bend area. However, most of the source scale is 1:40,000. The current data set is the result of revisions to the 1990 version. Some areas, including inland areas where there is no chart coverage and areas that have needed more accuracy for individual projects, have been digitized from USGS 7.5-minute Quadrangles and Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQs).

USER NOTES:
This data is provided 'as is'. GeoPlan relied on the integrity
of the original data layer's topology
This data is provided 'as is' by GeoPlan and is complete to our
knowledge.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute
(FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute
(FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical
data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine
Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in
references to ongoing research, new research, and contact
information.

The source scale varies from 1:10,000 to 1:80,000.

FWRI created this for visual reference in maps at about 1:40k scale,
or the largest scale available for an area.

Horizontal accuracy varies from 1:10,000 to 1:80,000

This data is provided 'as is' and its vertical positional accuracy
has not been verified by GeoPlan

THE DATA INCLUDED IN FGDL ARE 'AS IS' AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED
AS LEGALLY BINDING. THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA GEOPLAN CENTER SHALL
NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES SUFFERED AS A RESULT OF USING,
MODIFYING, CONTRIBUTING OR DISTRIBUTING THE MATERIALS.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
This Florida shoreline was originally digitized in 1990 by USFWS under
FWRI contract. In all cases, USFWS used the most detailed NOAA
navigational charts available at the time (i.e. harbor areas were taken from
1:10000 and the Big Bend was taken from 1:80000). In some areas,
nautical charts were insufficient and 1:24000 USGS quadrangles or DOQQs
were used instead of the nautical charts. This is especially true along rivers.
Process Date: 1990

The shoreline has been supplemented and updated from various sources including DOQQs and USGS 7.5-minute quadrangles. For a history file of updated areas, contact the GIS Librarian. Process Date: 2000
FWRI staff updated these data with revisions made during the "manatee speed zones" project of 2002. Process Date: 2003
FWRI staff updated the line work in Miami-Dade County to include line work digitized in-house for manatee speed zones and another project. Only major shoreline line work was edited, as well as some interior canal work that was important for the manatee speed zones. The revised line work was edge matched to the 1:40,000 shoreline line work, so that no interior canals were lost. The new line work and polygon attributes have been verified against 1999 DOQQs. Process Date: 200402
GeoPlan received this data in shapefile format on CD-ROM from FWRI on June 6, 2006. When received, the data was in Geographic projection Albers NAD 83, Spheroid: GRS 80. The file was projected to FGDL Albers HARN. When received this shape file was a polygon. It was converted to polyline using the polygon to line function in ArcTool Box. The resulting polyline file was edited to remove the Northern and Western border of the state that did not correspond to any coastline. This was done using the split line tool while editing. - Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN - ATTRIBUTE field was recalculated to COASTLINE from LAND - Added a DESCRIPT field to attribute table based on ATTRIBUTE - Added a FGDLAQDATE field based on date received from source - Renamed shapefile from fl_40k_nowater_poly to COAST - Recalculated SHAPE.LEN using X-Tools Process Date: 20060915
