TITLE: FLORIDA AIDS TO NAVIGATION

Geodataset Name: CGATON_JAN09
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Point
Feature Count: 15947
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This GIS data set represents the aids to navigation (ATONs) for the Seventh and Eighth Coast Guard Districts. The term "aids to navigation" refers to devices outside of a vessel that are used to assist mariners in determining their position, safe course or warn them of obstructions. Aids to navigation include light buoys and beacons. This data set includes federal aids, which are installed and maintained by the Coast Guard, as well as some privately maintained aids. This data set does not include unofficial (illegal) aids, such as PVC pipes, placed without permission. This data set is not certified for navigation and is not intended for navigation purposes. Each USCG district headquarters is responsible for updating its database on an as-needed basis. When existing aids are destroyed or relocated and new aids are installed, the database is updated. Each aid is assigned an official light listing number. The Light List is a document listing the status of the ATONs; it is regularly published and distributed. Interim changes to the Light List are published in local notices to mariners. In addition, the USCG broadcasts notices to mariners on the marine band radio as soon as changes in the status of individual aids are reported. Navigators should use the official notices to mariners to maintain current charts. Annual (or more frequent) updates of the Aids to Navigation database can be obtained from each USCG district headquarters.

T: Triangle used to mark the starboard (right) side of channels when proceeding from seaward. J: Junction (square or triangle) used to mark (preferred channel) junctions or bifurcations in the channel, or wrecks or obstructions which may be passed on either side; color of top band has lateral significance for the preferred channel. M: Safe water (octagonal) used to mark the fairway or middle of the channel. C: Crossing (western rivers only) diamond-shaped, used to indicate the points at which the channel crosses the river. K: Range (rectangular) when both the front and rear range dayboards are aligned on the same bearing, the observer is on the azimuth of the range, usually used to mark the center of the channel. USER NOTES:
Some points fall outside of the district 7, District 8 area. If the typographical
error could be verified (such as if a series of aids in sequential order with the
same name were all at 83 W longitude and one within the series had the typo
38 W longitude), then it was corrected. If the typo was not obvious the placement
of the aid was left alone.

For FGDL purposes these points were removed.
Aids without coordinates have been removed. Otherwise this data set is complete
as the source data provided by the Coast Guard.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI)
was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute
name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work
completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name
has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research,
and contact information.

This data set represents a GIS layer of ATONs as of December 2008,
with spatial extent of the Seventh Coast Guard District plus Sector Mobile
from the Eighth Coast Guard District.

These data are not to be used for navigation or positional referencing.
Users are instructed to consult the appropriate navigational chart, notice
to mariners, and light list for any purpose other than natural resource conservation
planning. Due to the possibility of unknown errors in reporting, projection or
datums the accuracy of these data are not certified. The existence, position
and description of features might have changed since data were originally
compiled in 2008.

FWRI has not attempted to verify horizontal positional accuracy, but typographical
errors may exist in the source data.

This data is provided 'as is' and its vertical positional accuracy
has not been verified by GeoPlan

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees
about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check
with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.

Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
The source data were received as Excel Spreadsheets from the Coast
Guard. FWRI reformatted the latitude and longitude to decimal degrees
in order to convert to shapefile using the Add X,Y tool in ArcMap. FWRI
also added additional attributes based on the information provided by the
coast guard. See the Entity and Attribute Section for more information.
Process Date: 200901

GeoPlan received this data in shapefile format via FTP from FWRI on July 7, 2009. When received, the data was in Geographic projection Albers NAD 83, Spheroid: GRS 80. The file was projected to FGDL Albers HARN. The shapefile received had 16545 records some of which fell outside the FGDL extent. The records that fell within the FGDL extent were selected out and exported to a new shapefile. Two points were deleted that fell outside of the districts. These points were Puerto De Tierra Pier 14 East Dock Light and NOAA Data Lighted Buoy 41043. Therefore this data set does not represent all aids to navigation for the Seventh and Eighth Coast Guard Districts. The final FGDL data set has 15947 records. For a complete Seventh and Eighth USCG District data set visit the FWRI site at: http://ocean.floridamarine.org/mrgis_ims/Description_Layers_Marine.htm - Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN - Changed DESCRIPT field to AID_DESC - Added a DESCRIPT field to attribute table based on AID_NAME - Added a FGDLAQDATE field based on date received from source - Renamed shapefile from atons_uscg_point to cgaton_jan09 - Upcased all records in the table Process Date: 200907009
