The most important attribute in this shapefile is GISJOIN because it provides the link between the shapefile and the aggregate data files. Any aggregate data file obtained through the NHGIS data access system will contain a GISJOIN attribute. Use this attribute to link the data with the shapefile for mapping purposes. Please note that values in GISJOIN begin with "G" in order to retain leading zeros. This update took effect on May 7, 2008. Attribute GISJOIN2 is an alternative linking attribute. GISJOIN2 is similar to GISJOIN except that its values do not begin with "G". GISJOIN2 may be used when linking to an aggregate data file extracted before May 7, 2008. |
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the source data |
The geographic areas represented in version 2.0 release have a matching record in the aggregate data files. Some geographic areas, however, do not have a matching aggregate data record. Additionally, some records in the aggregate data files could not be mapped because they are not represented in the boundary file. Version 2.0 boundary files have not been generalized, and geographic areas containing parts of the following bodies of water do not have historically accurate coastlines: the Great Lakes, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico. No geographic areas overlap and any polygon belongs to one and only one unique geographic entity. Every geographic entity has a FIPS-like code (GISJOIN) that uniquely identifies it. The aggregate data file contains a matching code (GISJOIN) so that the files can be easily joined together. |
All attributes in this boundary file were checked against attributes in the available aggregate data to ensure accuracy and consistency. The boundary file may contain more or fewer geographic entities than the aggregate data file. Sources for the boundary files sometimes depicted geographic areas that were not listed in the aggregate data file. Sometimes, the aggregate data files contains records for geographic areas that are not mappable (e.g. geographic entities representing water off of coastal areas). |
The NHGIS is an National Science Foundation-sponsored project (Grant No. BCS0648045) to supplement the digital spatial-temporal database created during NHGIS. The available shapefiles on the NHGIS site represent version 2.0 of historical US boundary files representing various geographic entities for the 1790- 2000 censuses. These electronic census boundary files were created from TIGER 2000 UA file. The boundary files have been checked against currently available historical census aggregate data. Census blocks, the smallest geographic area for which the Bureau of the Census collects and tabulates decennial census data, are formed by streets, roads, railroads, streams and other bodies of water, other visible physical and cultural features, and the legal boundaries shown on Census Bureau maps. (PG 11-1) |
These data are based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. BCS0648045 . NHGIS continuation grant has two major objectives: First, to add geographic levels to NHGIS files for 1980-2000. The new NHGIS geographies will include block, place, enumeration district, congressional district, and Zip Code Tabulation Areas. These new in addition to previously released geographic levels will then be synchronized to align with the revised TIGER/Line files. Second, the American Community Survey will be incorporated into the NHGIS. The release of these data partially completes the first objective of the NHGIS- continuation grant. These files will be re-released when conflated with the newly updated TIGER file. |
The horizontal positional accuracy of the source data is derived from TIGER 2000 UA . The boundaries representing the geographic entity was taken directly from the TIGER/Line file - no hand editing was done to the file. |
This data is provided 'as is' and its vertical positional accuracy has not been verified by GeoPlan |
This dataset was produced with an intended application at the city, county, metropolitan, or state/territory level. Appropriate uses include thematic mapping of census data and spatial analysis of census data. If these data are altered or incorporated into another dataset, they are not to be redistributed without also: altering the name of the dataset, including a Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD-001-1998) compliant metadata file that describes the dataset and reflects the alteration steps that makes the new dataset different from this one, and citing this dataset in the metadata as a source for the altered dataset using the source citation specified below. If these digital data are used in the production of a report or in the compilation of a standalone printed map, then this dataset is to be cited in the report or on the map using the source citation specified below. The following source citation should be used when citing this dataset: Minnesota Population Center. National Historical Geographic Information System: Version 2.0. Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota 2007. No fee may be charged for use or distribution. Publications and research reports based on the database must cite it appropriately. Users are requested to send a copy of any publications, research reports, or educational material making use of the data or documentation. Printed matter should be sent to: NHGIS Minnesota Population Center University of Minnesota 50 Willey Hall 225 19th Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55455 |
The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using, modifying, contributing or distributing the materials. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html |

Used the TGR2SHP program to convert the 2000 UA TIGER/Line files to shapefiles. TGR2SHP allowed us to create shapefiles for the different Census features (blocks, block groups, places, county subdivisions, etc.).
