GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains US Census Bureau 2000 data for the State of Florida. The data contains selected fields from the Summary 1 file that includes information on total population, race, sex, age, and household. This data is at the block level, the smallest unit of census data. Using GIS techniques, it is possible to summarize the data by Block Group, Tract, Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ), Zip Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), or County. Additional demographic data from the Summary 1 is available as supplemental tables that can be joined to Cenblk.shp (see FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES - Supplemental Tables).

USER NOTES:
The CENBLK.shp shapefile contains fields taken from the US Census 2000 Summary 1 file. There are approximately 40 fields that contain demographic data within the shapefile. These fields were created by the geography network and are made up of various fields from the Summary 1 file (for more information look to to "FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES"). If other demographic data is needed then there are additional tables from the Summary 1 file that can be joined to Cenblk.shp. In order to join the additional tables from the Summary 1 file, select the table you want and join it with the shapfile based on "LOGRECNO" (the field is in both the shapefile and the additional tables). Refer to the "FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES" in order to choose the table containing the field that is of use to you. Please take note that the Summary 1 file has 39 different table files associated with it. In order to condense the Summary 1 file we chose the 5 most important table files as we saw fit (SF1, SF2, SF3, SF4, SF37). These 5 tables have over 1000 attribute fields that have demographic data on total population, race, sex, age, and household. SF1 has data on total population and race, including Hispanic or Latino and race for the population 18 years and over. SF2 has data on race, sex by age, and household. SF3 has data on age in household and family. SF4 has data on family type and age of related and own children. Also, group quarters by sex and age group. SF37 has data on housing units and occupancy status including information on race and tenure of householder. The block level is the smallest unit of census data. Because of this it is possible to use various GIS techniques to summarize the data by Block Group, Tract, Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ), Zip Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), or County. The best way to extract these different entities is to perform a dissolve (for more information on how dissolve and other ways to use the Census data look to www.fgdl.org - Help and Notes). Use the following fields to perform the dissolve for the specified census entity: Census Entity Dissolve Field Block Goup - "Bggrp_disv" Tract - "Tract_disv" Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ) - "Taz_disv" ZCTA3 - "Zcta3" ZCTA5 - "Zcta5" County - "County" Census Block (as defined by U.S. Census Bureau): Census blocks are areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and by invisible boundaries, such as city, town, township, and county limits, property lines, and short, imaginary extensions of streets and roads. Generally, census blocks are small in area; for example, a block bounded by city streets. However, census blocks in sparsely settled areas may contain many square miles of territory. All territory in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas has been assigned block numbers, as was the case for the 1990 census. To improve operational efficiency and geographic identifications, the U.S. Census Bureau has introduced different numbering systems for tabulation blocks used in decennial census data products, and for collection blocks, used in administering the census. (In 1990, there generally was a single numbering system.) Collection block numbers are available only in the TIGER/Line data products; the U.S.Census Bureau does not tabulate data for collection blocks. Many tabulation blocks, used in decennial census data products, represent the same geographic area as the collection blocks used in the Census 2000 enumeration process. Where the collection blocks include territory in two or more geographic entities, each unique piece required for data tabulation is identified as a separate tabulation block with a separate block number. It is possible for two or more collection blocks to be combined into a single tabulation block. This situation can occur when a visible feature established as a collection block boundary is deleted during the field update operation. Tabulation blocks do not cross the boundaries of any entity for which the U.S.Census Bureau tabulates data, including American Indian areas, Alaska Native areas, Hawaiian home lands, census tracts, congressional districts, counties, county subdivisions, places, state legislative districts, urban and rural areas, school districts, voting districts, and ZIP Code tabulation areas. Tabulation blocks also generally do not cross the boundaries of certain landmarks, including military installations, national parks, and national monuments. Tabulation blocks are identified uniquely within census tract by means of a four-digit number. (The 1990 census block numbers had three digits, with a potential alphabetic suffix.) The Census 2000 collection blocks are numbered uniquely within county (or statistically equivalent entity), and consist of four or five digits. For its Census 2000 data tabulations, the U.S.Census Bureau created a unique set of census block numbers immediately before beginning the tabulation process. These are the census block numbers seen in the data presentations. For the 1990 census, the U.S.Census Bureau created a separate block with a suffix of Z to identify crews-of-vessels population. For Census 2000, crews-of-vessels population is assigned to the land block identified by the U.S.Census Bureau as associated with the home port of the vessel. Participants in certain U.S.Census Bureau-sponsored programs were able to request that line features in the TIGER database be held as tabulation block boundaries, provided that these conformed to U.S.Census Bureau criteria. This option was available to participants in the Census 2000 Redistricting Data Program (the Block Boundary Suggestion Project), American Indian and Alaska Native Area Tribal Review (Block Definition Project), and the District of Columbia and the Puerto Rico Block Boundary Definition Project. The U.S.Census Bureau introduced a different method for identifying the water areas of census blocks. For the 1990 census, water was not uniquely identified within a census block; instead, all water area internal to a block group was given a single block number ending in 99 (for example, in block group 1, all water was identified as block 199). A suffix was added to each water block number where the block existed in more than one tabulation entity within its block group. For Census 2000, water area located completely within the boundary of a single land tabulation block has the same block number as that land block. Water area that touches more than one land block is assigned a unique block number not associated with any adjacent land block. The water block numbers begin with the block group number followed by 999 and proceed in descending order (for example, in block group 3, the numbers assigned to water areas that border multiple land blocks are 3999, 3998, etc.). In some block groups, the numbering of land blocks might use enough of the available numbers to reach beyond the 900 range within the block group. For this reason, and because some land blocks include water (ponds and small lakes), no conclusions about whether a block is all land or all water can be made by looking at the block number. The land/water flag, set at the polygon level in the TIGER database and shown in TIGER/Line and statistical data tabulation files, is the only way to know if a block is all water when viewing the computer files. On maps,water areas are shown with a screen symbol. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses.
