FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
TITLE: CENSUS BLOCK GROUP CENTROIDS, 1990
Geodataset Name: CBG1990 Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POINT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains Census Block Group centroid points as they are defined by the Bureau of the Census. Census block groups are geographic entities within the same census tract. Block groups usually contain between 250 and 550 housing units.

USER NOTES:
The centroids from this dataset are taken from a CD supplied by the U.S. Census Bureau entitled "Spatial Patterns of Socioeconomic Data from 1970 to 2000". The CD was created to provide a source of time-series geo-referenced socioeconmic data. The census data was orginally used by NOAA to incorporate into their Coastal Assessment Framework (CAF). It is important to note that the centroids are accurate for the most part, however, should not be used for small scale studies. The data is designed for regional and state wide research. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html These data are based on interpretation of available information and should not be construed as legally binding.

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
This data was orginally taken from the U.S. Census Bureau CD entitled "Spatial Patterns of Socioeconomic Data from 1970 to 2000". The data was taken from the CD in text file format. The text file was converted to a dbf and a shapefile was created in ArcMap 8.2 by using the add XY command based on the decimal degree coordinates included in the table. The shapefile was then projected from geographic nad27 to albers hpgn.
