USER NOTES:
Logically consistent. All attribute values fall within defined values
Visually inspected for completeness to ensure all values fell within
specified ranges.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was
known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute
name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work
completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name
has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research,
and contact information.

These data display the locations and the associated attributes
of black bear roadkills in the state of Florida, from 1976 to 2008.

We immediately eliminated two 2008 records that were not associated with
geographic coordinates. The GIS analyst overlaid the remaining 2008 point
locations onto current roads, counties, and imagery layers. Five locations
were not aligned with roads; these were removed from the dataset pending
closer examination. All positions recorded from a GPS unit; errors vary
depending upon precision and accuracy of each unit.

This data is provided 'as is' and its vertical positional accuracy
has not been verified by GeoPlan

metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered
data, such as reprojection. If any data are modified or adjusted, please share the edited
information with FWC. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the
same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from
changes in mapping conventions, data collection, and computer processes over time. FWC

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees
about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check
with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.

Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
Dataset Preparation: Using the Query tool, we extracted roadkill records,
1976-2008, from a Microsoft Access database maintained by FWC's Black
Bear Management Program. The dataset was visually inspected for
attribute errors by college interns with the Program.
Process Date: 2009

We imported the completed roadkill dataset into ArcGIS (version 9.3, ESRI, Redlands, California) as a shapefile. Then, we assigned North American Datum 1983 as the datum for the latitude/longitude geographic coordinates. In part to evaluate the positional and attribute accuracy of the data, we overlaid the points onto both county and roads layers. Data that was not readily associated with a road was further examined by overlaying the data on top of 2006-2008 DOQQs. This step allowed us to search for unrecorded roads. When a location could not be visually confirmed, the record was eliminated. In 2008, 142 vehicular mortalities of black bears occurred. Two points were eliminated immediately from the dataset because of missing geographical coordinates. Five of the 2008 records were further eliminated for positional inaccuracies. As a result, the 1976-2008 bear-mortality dataset contained a total of 1876 records; 135 of these records were in 2008. Process Date: 2009
GeoPlan received the data via email from FFWCC. Original shapefile was named bear_roadkill_1976-2008 and was in the GCS North American 1983 coordinate system. - Reprojected the data to FGDL Albers HGPN Projection. - Renamed the dataset to bearrdkill_2008 - Upcased all fields - Added a Descript field based on SpecfiLoc. If SpecfiLoc was not available Locale was used. - Added FGDLAQDATE based on the date FGDL acquired the data. Process Date: 20100106
Data imported to ArcSDE and exported as a shapefile. Process Date: 20100301
