TITLE: FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION URBAN BOUNDARIES - JANUARY 2015

Geodataset Name: URBAN_JAN15
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polygon
Feature Count: 77
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Areas identified as urban, derived from U.S. Census (2010). The boundaries were modified from the original boundaries received from the Census for Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) purposes. This is an update to the FGDL layer URBAN_APR07, which was based on 2000 U.S. Census data. This data should be used for FDOT purposes only, users who are interested in urban boundaries are encouraged to acquire the original data from the Census web site.

collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
The TIGER/Line Files are shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) that are an
extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census
Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and
Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless
national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line
File is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be
combined to cover the entire nation. After each decennial census, the Census
Bureau delineates urban areas that represent densely developed territory,
encompassing residential, commercial, and other nonresidential urban land uses. In
general, this territory consists of areas of high population density and urban land use
resulting in a representation of the "urban footprint." There are two types of urban
areas: urbanized areas (UAs) that contain 50,000 or more people and urban clusters
(UCs) that contain at least 2,500 people, but fewer than 50,000 people (except in
the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam which each contain urban clusters with
populations greater than 50,000). Each urban area is identified by a 5-character
numeric census code that may contain leading zeroes.A population field extracted
from the 2010 Census block data was added to this file in April 2012 for query
purposes. The Federal Highway Administration only recognizes areas with a
population of 5,000 or greater. This dataset was queried from the original census
data to meet that criteria. The data was then sent to the Districts to coordinate
smoothing efforts.
Process Date: 2014

The data set was taken from the Florida Department of Transportation Statistics Office's personal geodatabase from the following webpage: http://www.dot.state.fl.us/planning/statistics/gis The data set was originally downloaded in January 2015.The data was originally in UTM Zone 17, Nad83, units meters. The data was projected to Albers HPGN. Metadata did not exist with the original layer, the metadata from the existing FGDL layer (URBAN_APR07) was updated to create this metadata. -Download the most recent Statewide personal geodatabase -Export URBAN layer to shapefile -Project the shape file to the standard FGDL projection. -Renamed layer from URBAN to URBAN_JAN15 -Upcased Name Field -Deleted FID_, Shape_Leng, Shape_Le_1, Shape_Le_2, Shape_Area -Added DESCRIPT field based on field NAME -Added FGDLAQDATE field based on the date the data was acquired.
