FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2004
TITLE: WATER MONITORING SECTION (WMS) REPORTING UNITS
Geodataset Name: WMSREP Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains WMS (Water Monitoring Section) Tier 1 Status Network Reporting Units. The purpose of the Status Network is to characterize the environmental conditions of Florida's water resources in an efficient, systematic, and scientifically defensible manner. There are four reporting units within each water managment district, which are the basis of a five-year rotating monitoring plan. USGS staff created the reporting unit boundaries using a Hydrologic Unit coverage that existed prior to the 1997 updated 1:24,000 Major Hydrologic Basins. USER NOTES:
The state was divided into five primary spatial strata that coincide with Florida's five Water Management Districts (WMD's). Secondary spatial strata were determined (reporting units) as one or more USGS Hydrologic Units: each WMD was divided into four reporting units. The four reporting units within each WMD are the basis of a five-year rotating monitoring plan. During the five-year cycle, all reporting units from each WMD will be sampled in a random sequence. Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html These data are based on interpretation of available information and should not be construed as legally binding.
