Wekiva River: National Wild and Scenic River
http://www.rivers.gov/wsr-wekiva.html
National Park Service
Atlanta Federal Center
1924 Building
100 Alabama Street, SW
Atlanta, Georgia 30303
Telephone: (404) 562-3175 x 522

Designated Reach: October 13, 2000. The Wekiva River from its confluence with the St. Johns River to
Wekiva Springs.
Rock Springs Run from its headwaters at Rock Springs to the confluence with the Wekiwa Springs Run.
Black Water Creek from the outflow from Lake Norris to the confluence with the Wekiva River.

Classification/Mileage: Wild 31.4 miles; Scenic 2.1 miles; Recreational 8.1 miles; Total 41.6 miles.

The Wekiva River Basin is a complex ecological system of rivers, springs, seepage areas, lakes, streams,
sinkholes, wetland prairies, hardwood hammocks, pine flatwoods and sand pine scrub communities. Water
quality is exhibited in two ways. Several streams are clear due to being spring-fed. Others are blackwater;
blackwater streams receive most of their flow from precipitation resulting in annual rainy season over-bank
flows. The Wekiva and its tributaries are in superb ecological condition.
The basin is almost entirely within Florida State lands and supports many species of plant and animal life,
some of which are endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Elevations range from sea level to about
35 feet above sea level. The climate is subtropical, with an average annual temperature of around 72 degrees.
Mean annual rainfall over the Wekiva basin is 52 inches, most of which occurs during the June-October rainy
season.

Wild & Scenic Study Rivers
Study Status (As of January 2010)
http://www.rivers.gov/study.html

The number of rivers included in the National System differs from the number of rivers authorized for study by
Congress for the following reasons:

    * Not all rivers studied are found eligible or suitable for designation, many study rivers will not be
      included in the National System.
    * Some rivers are designated by Congress or the Secretary of the Interior without a pre-authorization or
      5(a) study (e.g., the Niobrara).
    * Some rivers are designated through recommendations prepared in federal agency planning processes
(e.g., 40 rivers designated in Oregon in 1988).

I. Public Law 90-542 (October 2, 1968) 27 rivers, studies due October 2, 1978
(25) Suwannee, Florida and Georgia. (BOR) Report transmitted to Congress on March 15, 1974.
Preservation of river by state recommended. (272 miles)

V. Public Law 95-625 (November 10, 1978) 17 rivers, studies due October 1, 1984
(60) Loxahatchee, Florida. (NPS) Seven point five miles added to the National System
by the Secretary of the Interior on May 17, 1985. (25 miles)
(70) Myakka, Florida. (NPS) Report transmitted to Congress on April 26, 1985.
Preservation of river by state recommended. (37 miles)

XVIII. Public Law 101-364 (August 15, 1990) 1 river, study due August 15, 1993
(108) St. Marys, Florida. (NPS) Draft report issued on March 16, 1994. River was determined eligible,
but final report not transmitted to Congress. (120 miles)

XXXI. Public Law 104-311 (October 19, 1996) 1 river, study due October 19, 1998
(136) Wekiva, Florida. (NPS) Forty-one point six miles added to the National System,
      Public Law 106-299, October 13, 2000. (27 miles)

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
This data was constructed by selecting linear attributes from the DLG Hydrological
Data layer. The "Florida Rivers Assessment" was, when possible, used as a
reference for selecting the boundaries of each water body. Wild & Scenic Rivers
were extracted by name.
Process Date: 1989

Original FGDL layer was created by Florida Resources and Environmental Analysis Center (FREAC). GeoPlan received Loxahatchee Linework 8/15/05 from cconrad@sfwmd.gov. Deleted linework from existing wildriver layer that had overlap with new SFWMD linework. Merged lox_trappers_down (converted from poly to line before merge) also merged lox_trappers_up. The product of the merge is the new WILDRIVER_AUG05. Process Date: 20060213
GeoPlan downloaded data from the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System Mapping website (http://www.rivers.gov/maps.html) on June 22nd, 2010. http://www.rivers.gov/maps/gis/gis.zip Master_Conus_WSR2009_Oct20.shp Data Source: USDA-Forest Service Recreation Solutions Feature Count: 2030 features Scale: 2,000,000 for segments compiled before the year 2000, 24,000 for segments compiled thereafter. Projection: North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic Geographic Coordinate System: GCS_North_American_1983 Dan Haas U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 64 Maple Street Burbank, Washington 99323 Telephone: (509) 546-8333 Email: daniel_haas@fws.gov - GeoPlan selected out features that intersected the State of Florida and reprojected the subset to the FGDL Albers NAD83 HARN Projection. - GeoPlan replaced the Wekiva River features in the existing WILDRIVER_AUG05 with the updated Wekiva River features from the subset of the Master_Conus_WSR2009_Oct20.shp - GeoPlan then visually inspected the Loxahatchee River features from the existing WILDRIVER_AUG05 and compared them to the subset of the Master_Conus_WSR2009_Oct20.shp. Based on the Designated Reach and Classification/Mileage from the National Wild & Scenic Rivers website (http://www.rivers.gov/wsr-loxahatchee.html) it was determined that the existing WILDRIVER_AUG05 Loxahatchee River features were inaccurate. Because the Loxahatchee River features from the subset Master_Conus_WSR2009_Oct20.shp were not to a fine enough scale it was determined that the best update would be to edit the existing Loxahatchee River features from the original WILDRIVER_AUG05 layer to better fit the correct designated reach. Loxahatchee River Designated Reach: May 17, 1985. From Riverbend Park downstream to Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Classification/Mileage: Wild 1.3 miles; Scenic 5.8 miles; Recreational 0.5 miles; Total 7.6 miles. - GeoPlan downloaded and reviewed the following report in order to help determine the correct extent of the Loxahatchee River features. Loxahatchee River Wild & Scenic River Management Plan http://www.loxahatcheeriver.org/pdf/LRNWSRMP_1.pdf Page 137 of 166 : Loxahatchee River Corridor Classifications (Figure 2). The federally designated Wild and Scenic Corridor lies along the middle portion of the Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee River. This fork extends from its headwaters in the Loxahatchee and Hungryland Sloughs downstream to its merger with the other two tributaries near Jupiter Inlet. Using Figure 2 from the Loxahatchee River Wild & Scenic River Management Plan (LRNWSRMP_1.pdf) GeoPlan edited the Loxahatchee River features from the WILDRIVER_AUG05 to fit the correct extent of the designated section of the Loxahatchee River. During this edit many features that fell outside the designated reach were deleted. - GeoPlan then renamed the updated version of WILDRIVER_AUG05 to WILDRIVER_OCT09. - GeoPlan updated the attribute table for the newly added features. - GeoPlan added and populated the following fields: SFWMD_NAME was renamed to RIVER_NAME, DESIGNATE, DESCRIPT, FGDLAQDATE.
