FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
TITLE: REGIONAL EXITING STORM SURGE ZONES IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
Geodataset Name: SWXTST Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains storm surge zones for a hurricane that is exiting the southwest coast of Florida, approaching from the east and going into the Gulf of Mexico. This data was used in the Southwest Florida Hurricane Evacuation Study DATA SOURCE(S): Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council SCALE OF ORIGINAL SOURCE MAPS: N/A DATE OF AUTOMATION OR SOURCE: 10/30/01 GEODATASET EXTENT: SW Florida: Sarasota, Lee, Charlotte, and Collier Counties

FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES:
ITEM ITEM DESCRIPTION SHAPE Data attribute inherent to the ESRI shapefile format, which defines the data as a point, polyline, or polygon. COUNTY County name SURGE_ELEV The elevation of the water for that zone above mean sea level. To get the elevation of the water above the land you would need to subtract the land elevation from this number. Refer to the Hurricane Storm Tide Atlas produced by the SWFRPC for that particular county for more information CATEGORY The storm category for that zone. USER NOTES:
This data was developed as part of the local mitigation strategy grant. The Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council was contracted to do the LMS critical facility work on Lee, Collier, Glades and Hendry Counties. Sarasota County and Charlotte County were done by thier own in house GIS department. Because the SWFRPC did not produce those 2 counties critical facilities data, we can not attest to the accuracy of it. While the Charlotte County data apears to be accurate, the Sarasota County data has some blatant errors of which they admit, as in points falling far out in the water. The data here was the latest available they had at the time. The dataset provides location and attribute information for use in national and regional cartographic and network analysis applications. A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
This data was originally released by individual counties in 2001. In 2001, the GeoPlan Center downloaded this dataset in shapefile format from the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council (http://www.swfrpc.org/maps.htm). When received, the data was in the following projection: State Plane East, Datum: NAD 27, Units: Feet. The shapefile was then projected to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below).
