TITLE: SHARED-USE NONMOTORIZED (SUN) TRAIL NETWORK IN FLORIDA - JUNE 2017

Geodataset Name: SUNTRAILNETWORK_JUN17
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polyline
Feature Count: 795
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The SUN Trail dataset represents the existing, planned and conceptual paved multiuse trails for bicyclists and pedestrians, physically separated from vehicular traffic, that form a land-based statewide trail network. This map is a synthesis of trail planning efforts of municipalities, counties, transportation planning organizations, other public agencies and non-profits entities throughout Florida. This data does not include all existing, proposed and conceptual trails in Florida, but focuses on high priority linear corridors and connections of statewide and regional significance to form a comprehensive connected system. The SUN Trail data is derived from the Florida Greenways and Trails System (FGTS) Priority Land Trails Network, overseen by the Office of Greenways and Trails, modified by removal of corridors not envisioned as paved trails. FDOT defines a multiuse trail as a paved, shared use path, which is typically 12 feet wide, but may commonly vary from 10 feet to 14 or more feet depending upon physical or environmental constraints or volume of use. In some areas of extreme constraints such as at bridges or in environmentally sensitive lands where conditions require a smaller footprint, a multiuse trail may be as narrow as eight feet.

CST_TO_CST Coast-to-Coast Connector Trail. The Coast-to-Coast Connector will link communities between St. Petersburg and Titusville, providing a safe, scenic and sunsational multi-use trail allowing residents and visitors to explore Central Florida by bicycle and on foot. This connector will be the first of its kind in Florida and has already fueled the economic revitalization of communities along its route such as Dunedin and Winter Garden. The C2C is a major priority within the Florida Greenways and Trails System Plan developed by the Office of Greenways and Trails and has already fueled the economic revitalization of communities along its route such as Dunedin and Winter Garden

CAP_TO_SEA Capital City to the Sea Trail. The Capital City to the Sea Trails (CC2ST) is envisioned to be a series of trails that will connect various regions of Leon County and Wakulla County and in the future Franklin, Gadsden, and Jefferson Counties. These trails are not defined for specific users but instead will provide transportation options to allow the movement of citizens in these counties by means other than motorized vehicle. Some of the existing Trails that make up this system include the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail (Leon County and Wakulla County) and the Ochlockonee Bay Bike Trail (Wakulla County)

SJ_RV_SEA St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop Trail. The St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop is forming through a five-county upper east-central region bounded north and south by St. Augustine, America s oldest continuous city, and Titusville, gateway to the Kennedy Space Center, although the route itself is chiefly rural. The Loop further historically connects a St. Johns River site once visited by John James Audubon, and country museums with their collections of steamboats, lighthouse keeping, and catch-all Florida memorabilia. Of the route's 260 miles, 51 are currently paved and traffic free and are already popular. One woodland section links springs along its namesake Spring-to-Spring Trail, including Gemini Springs County Park and DeLeon Springs State Park. Connecting to the Spring-to-Spring Trail is the first completed section of the East Central Regional Rail Trail. Passing directly along the beaches is the Flagler County A1A Bike Path. Another section, the Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail, traverses agricultural countryside. Additional highlights of the route include a restaurant in DeLeon Springs where guests prepare their own pancakes at griddles built into their tables, and the main campus of Stetson University in downtown DeLand, which also like Palatka, is a small-town county seat accessible by Amtrak. The route is also wildflower profuse in spring and fall

The Florida Shared-Use Nonmotorized (SUN) Trail Network is authorized under
339.81, F.S. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is directed to
make use of its expertise in efficiently providing transportation projects to
develop a statewide system of paved non-motorized trails as a component of
the Florida Greenways and Trails System (FGTS), which is planned by
the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
GeoPlan Center Process Steps:
The GeoPlan Center received the Florida Shared-Use Nonmotorized (SUN) Trail
Network data layer: SUNTrailNetwork.shp from the Florida Department of
Transportation, Systems Planning Office on July 11th, 2017 via email.

The SUNTrailNetwork.shp was originally in the following projection:
NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_17N

The dataset was Reprojected to the FGDL Albers projection:
Albers Conical Equal Area [Florida Geographic Data Library]

Next, two attribute fields were added:
- DESCRIPT based on the existing field SEG_NAME
- FGDLAQDATE based on the date FGDL acquired the data: 20170711

Next, the attribute table was optimized for the data it contains and the
attributes were uppercased.

Then the metadata was updated and a thumbnail was added.

Finally, the dataset was renamed to suntrailnetwork_jun17.shp
Process Date: 20170712
