FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2005
TITLE: SPATIAL EXTENT OF THE SUBMERGED LANDS ACT
Geodataset Name: SLA Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains the geographic extent of Submerged Lands Act as it applies to the coastal regions of the State of Florida. It is based on interpretations of references in the U.S. Code, U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, and various other legal documents. This dataset essentially represents state owned waters.

USER NOTES:
A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html These data are based on interpretation of available information and should not be construed as legally binding.
FGDL QUALITY ASSURANCE STATUS:
-Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below) -Upcased all character records -Clipped to the State of Florida -DESCRIPT item was added based on the item Pl_CITE -Dropped old internal coverage items: SLA_#, SLA_ID
DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
This data was created by the NOAA Coastal Services Center and published in 1998. In order to represent the geographic extent of Submerged Lands Act, the federal/state boundary from Minerals Management Service was buffered (3 nautical miles in Atlantic, 9 nautical miles in the Gulf of Mexico) to create a landward boundary representing the shoreline. This buffered area was built for polygon topology and attributes were added. In 2002, the GeoPlan Center downloaded this data in shapefile format from Ocean Planning and Governance Geographic Information System (Ocean GIS) website: http://www.csc.noaa.gov/opis/html/data.htm. When received, the data was in the following projection: Geographic, Datum: NAD83, Spheroid: GRS1980, Units: Decimal degrees. The data was clipped from the OPIS Southeastern extent to the State of Florida and reprojected to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below). The DESCRIPT item was added based on PL_CITE, lowercase characters within the attribute table were upcased, and the following old internal coverage items were dropped: SLA_#, SLA_ID.
