The Florida Shorebird Database (FSD) collects current occurrence information and reproductive data on 6 focal species of solitary nesting shorebirds (American Oystercatcher, Black-necked Stilt, Killdeer, Snowy Plover, Willet, Wilson s Plover) and 14 species of colonial nesting seabirds (Black Skimmer, Bridled Tern, Brown Noddy, Brown Pelican, Caspian Tern, Gull-billed Tern, Laughing Gull, Least Tern, Magnificent Frigatebird, Masked Booby, Roseate Tern, Royal Tern, Sandwich Tern, Sooty Tern). These species nest on beaches and sometimes rooftops along the Florida coast. The FSD also collects occurrence data on wintering species of shorebirds and seabirds using coastal habitat in Florida. The FSD is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and is maintained as a free online resource for information on Florida's shorebirds and seabirds. This is an update to the shorebirds_may16 dataset.
Long-term monitoring of shorebirds and seabirds across Florida is impracticable for any one agency or organization, and requires an extensive network of groups and individuals. The FSD facilitates this collaborative approach by providing a central location for data entry, compilation, and storage. Data from the FSD are used in many ways. At the local and regional level, partners regularly rely on the data to plan and assess management activities for particular shorebird and seabird sites in their area. In addition, different agencies use the data to review permits for proposed projects near important shorebird and seabird sites. At the statewide level, biologists plan to use these data to determine distribution, status, and trends for various species of shorebird and seabird in Florida. They will inform important conservation planning efforts such as setting conservation priorities, identifying critical habitat, and assessing species for state listing.
The original online database, the Florida Beach-nesting Birds Website, was launched in 2005. This database was designed as a management tool providing real-time information to managers and permit reviewers to help them respond to situations involving nesting shorebirds and seabirds. However, as use of the database expanded, its potential as a research tool soon became evident. In 2010 [These 2005-2010 data are available as a separate dataset, BeachNestingBirds_2005_2010_fl_pnt]. FWC collaborated with multiple partners to create the Florida Shorebird Database (FSD). By restructuring the old database and standardizing monitoring protocols, the FSD can serve as the tool that will provide answers to important questions about the status of shorebirds and seabirds in Florida while continuing to function as a management tool. Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

This data was collected primarily by members of the Florida Shorebird Alliance (FSA). The FSA is a statewide partnership of government and non-government organizations committed to advancing shorebird and seabird conservation in Florida through coordinated and collaborative work that helps identify and address important needs with regard to research, management, education, outreach, and public policy. This database and online data entry application were developed by Kristin Rogers, Jake Gipson and Chris Burney with input from FWC staff and the FSA. State Wildlife Grant funding supports multiple shorebird and seabird projects and staff. The statewide beaches HCP grant supports the maintenance of this database and website.

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation.
