USER NOTES:

The GeoPlan Center, under a contract with The State of Florida, Department of Community Affairs (DCA) developed radon potential and radon protection maps and associated databases for the state. Working in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey, the Florida Geological Survey, the University of Florida Soil and Water Science Department, and Rogers and Associates Engineering Corporation, GeoPlan utilized geographic information systems (GIS) technologies to combine soil, geology, and National Uranium Resource Evaluation aeroradiometric data for radon potential modeling and mapping. The state-wide maps produced for this project showed areas where different levels of radon potential would require different levels of radon protection. The maps and corresponding data were to be used as a technical basis for implementing radon-resistant building construction standards in areas of high radon potential. In this way the standards could be applied in areas where they are needed and avoided where they are unnecessary. The standards are aimed at reducing indoor radon accumulations and the related risks of lung cancer.

Within the maps, red, green, or yellow colors are achieved by using the ARC/INFO shade set hpispp.shd. If a value of 0 for color item is present that is a result of boundary discrepancies and is being currently updated.

FGDL QUALITY ASSURANCE STATUS:

-Set Precision to DOUBLE

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:

NURE data were obtained on 9-track tape from the United States Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia. The NURE project (at least in north central Florida)was conducted by EG&G Geometrics, Sunnyvale, California, for the United States Department of Energy, Grand Junction Office, Colorado. Generalized soils data from the State Soil Geographic Data Base (STATSGO) were obtained from the Soil and Water Science Department at the University of Florida (Scale of source: 1:250,000). Geology data were provided by the Florida Geological Survey (Scale of source: County maps at various scales as determined by FGS).
