FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES:

Item
Item Description
FID Internal feature number.

Shape Feature geometry.

AREA Area of the polygon (meters).

PERIMETER Perimeter of the polygon (meters)

MANAGED_AR Unique numeric feature identifier, designed by NatureServe.

MACODE_BCD Managed Area code, designed by The Nature Conservancy. Unique identifier for each Managed Area, beginning with "M.USFLHP*".

MANAME Official name of the Managed Area.

MAJORNAME Official name of the major Managed Area (used only if the Managed Area is nested). Major Managed Area refers to a larger managed area that contains the managed area in question. For example, Abe Trull Research Natural Area is contained within St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. For Abe Trull RNA, St. Marks NWR is the Major Managed Area, and the MAJORMA is M.USFLHP*126 (= MACODE for St. Marks NWR). When the Managed Area is not part of a larger managed area, this attribute item is left blank.

MATYPE Code for the Managed Area by lead managing agency.

1st byte = Managing Agency Category:
F=Federal, S=State, L=Local, P=Private

2nd and 3rd bytes = Managing Agency: (e.g., AF= US Air Force)

4th and 5th bytes = Managed Area Unit Type (e.g., AB= Air Force Base)

If a managing agency has only one type of MA Unit, the MA Unit Type code can be the managing agency code repeated (e.g., for Audubon

of Florida sanctuaries, the code is PFAFA).

LTF_ACRES Number of acres within the Managed Area that are in less-than-fee ownership.

COUNTY Abbreviation for the county or counties where the Managed Area is located.

PROTSTAT Protection status. A single-digit code as follows:
1 = Protected - This status includes areas, such as those "dedicated" under appropriate statutes, which specifically prohibit removing the existing, strong, legal protections without obtaining the approval of higher levels of government and without following very specific legal procedures. It also includes any land owned as a natural area by The Nature Conservancy or other conservation group with similar conservation objectives.

2 = Semi-protected - This status is for National Wildlife Refuges, National Recreation Areas, state wildlife refuges, and like areas; i.e. areas protected but not specifically for the rarest Elements, and often allowing habitat manipulations for game species, song bird cover, etc. Certain other areas might be included here such as zones within parks which are designated for a special use that may not fully protect important Element Occurrences.

3 = Unprotected - Areas that are neither preserved nor protected. Examples include National Forest land which is not specially designated; public domain land (BLM); and any other land including registry and voluntary protection sites that do not meet the above "protected" or "semi-protected" definitions.

USER NOTES:
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within the original data.

Additional information regarding some of the attribute items: MATYPE - Managed Area Unit Type codes are unique (i.e., no repetition between or within agencies). If a managing agency has only one type of MA Unit, the MA Unit Type code is just the managing agency code repeated.

When performing statistical analyses on the TOTACRES field (i.e., using ArcView or ArcGIS to calculate total acreages for a group of Managed Areas), subtract all Managed Areas that are a part of a major Managed Area (i.e., Managed Areas that have a MAJOR_MA). This is necessary to avoid duplication of acreages since the TOTACRES field for a major Managed Area includes the acreage(s) of smaller Managed Area(s) nested within it.

A note concerning data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale
datasetsare not suitable for some project, analysis, or
modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best
available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that
are at the county level.

1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base
mapping such as property parcel boundaries.

1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that
are at the multi-county or regional level.

1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that
are at the regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should
be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with
your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every
effort has been made to supply the user with data
documentation. For additional information, see the
References sectionand the Data Source Contact section of
this documentation. For more information regarding scale
and accuracy, see our web pages at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:

Public Lands were extracted from the FNAI Managed Areas
shape file. GeoPlan obtained an updated managed areas
shapefile from FNAI in March 2005. The public lands were
extracted by selecting all records with MATYPE not equal to
'P' (all non-privately owned lands).
