Abstract:

This dataset contains National Park Service unit boundaries for the State of Florida.
This is an update to the FGDL nps_dec15 layer.

Purpose:

Service wide boundary set for display and general analysis purposes.

The data is intended for use as a tool for display and general GIS analysis
purposes only. It is in no way intended for engineering or legal purposes.
The data accuracy is checked against best available sources which may
be dated. NPS assumes no liability for use of this data. Boundaries from
the Land Resources Division have separate polygons for each type of unit.
For example Denali National Park and Denali National Preserve are
separate individual polygons.

Process_Description:

Boundary polygons for several units have been updated with data from
the Lands Resources Division (LRD) according to the procedures defined
in the Lands Acquisition Procedures Manual Chapter 5. Boundary data
from LRD has separate polygons for individual types of units like Denali
National Park and Denali National Preserve. Lands records in the dataset
that can be identified by querying for [GIS_Notes] = "Lands" in the attribute
table. LRD updated units are also identified in the place keywords of this
metadata record but by alpha code and each units full name and desigination.

Process_Description:

Two sets of boundaries were collected and compared. The main set
was obtained from David Duran, who collected boundaries from each
region in the summer of 2001. The second set was obtained from Dean
Tucker, who digitized boundaries for the Horizon Project. The main set
from David Duran was determined to contain the most recent boundary
information. Parks missing from David's set were added from Deans set.

Canal NHP, Chimney Rock NHS, Fort Point NHS, Fredericksburg NC,
George Washington Memorial Parkway, Green Springs, Harpers Ferry
NHP, International Peace Garden, John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, Kalaupapa NHP, Manassas NBP, Monocacy NB,
National Capital Parks - Central and East, Olympic NP, Prince William
Forest Park, Rock Creek Park, San Francisco Maritime NHP, Thaddeus
Kosciuszko NMEM, and Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts.
Park/Region staff were consulted for parks with major differences
between the two sets.

Boundaries were updated with data provided by National Parks or Regional Offices.

Process_Description:

The GeoPlan Center took the following steps during the QA/QC process:
- Downloaded the dataset from NPS on 9/14/2017 using this link:
  https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2224545?lnv=True
  (original dataset in shapefile format and in the NAD 1983 geographic
  coordinate system).
- Records were removed using data in the STATE field. Only records
  with the value of "FL" in the STATE field were kept.
- Dataset projected into the FGDL Albers HPGN projection.
- DESCRIPT field added based on  UNIT_NAME field.
- FGDLAQDATE field added based on the date the dataset was
  downloaded from source.
- Added ACRES field and calculated area.
- The longest record for each field was found and field character lengths
  were shortened to the appropriate shortest length possible.
- Uppercased records in the dataset.
- Layer name changed from nps_boundary.shp to nps_jun17.shp.
