TITLE: NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY AREAS

Geodataset Name: NMARSA_DEC04
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polygon
Feature Count: 1
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The National Marine Sanctuary Program manages a system of sanctuaries and other managed areas around the country. The legal boundaries of these sanctuaries are defined within the Code of Federal Regulations, at 15 C.F.R. Part 922 and the subparts for each national marine sanctuary. The GIS compatible digital boundary files for each national marine sanctuary are representations of those legal boundaries and are based on the best available data. These files are available for public use at locations defined in this metadata record.

USER NOTES:
The data were topologically cleaned.
Where possible, the entire boundary for the sanctuary is represented by this digital file.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.

These GIS compatible digital files are provided to promote an understanding of the
boundaries of each national marine sanctuary. They are based on the legal
definition of each sanctuary as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, at 15
C.F.R. Part 922 and the subparts for each national marine sanctuary. These digital
files are not intended and should not be relied upon for use in navigation or legal
purposes. For legal questions relating to the digital files, please contact the
NMSP at the information provided in this metadata record.

MODIFYING, CONTRIBUTING OR DISTRIBUTING THE MATERIALS.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
The geographic boundary coordinates listed within the United States
Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) were converted to decimal degrees
and a text file was created. A point coverage was then generated
using ArcInfo GIS. The coverage was projected into the Geographic
Coordinate System and overlaid on large scale nautical charts and
analyzed with additional data such as adjacent sanctuaries and
shorelines. Specific attention was given to analysis of
inconsistencies between textual descriptions and listed
coordinates. The polyline files were created using a combination of the
coordinate list from the CFR and applicable shoreline vector files. For
point files, two methods were used. If the sanctuary had a shoreline
component, a polyline to point script was used to create a point for
each vertice. If a shoreline component was not present, then the
original coordinates from the CFR were used to create a point shapefile.
Polygon files were created by converting polylines to polygons. For
more detailed process description, please use contact information below.

GeoPlan downloaded this dataset from the National Marine Sanctuaries website (http://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/library/imast_gis.html) on 2/4/2008. The data was received as a shapefile in projection: Albers, NAD 83, GRS 80. The dataset was then projected from NAD 83 to FGDL Albers HPGN. - Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN - Added a DESCRIPT field to attribute table based on SANCTUARY. The SANCTUARY is an acronym field. The DESCRIPT contains the full sanctuary name. - Added a FGDLAQDATE field based on date of download from source - Deleted DATUM field - Added AREA and PERIMETER fields using X-tools - Changed data name from fknms_py to nmarsa_dec04 Process Date: 20080205
Data imported to ArcSDE and exported as a shapefile. Process Date: 20080220
