The National Highway Planning Network is a comprehensive network database of the nation's major highway system. It consists of over 400,000 miles of the nation's highways comprised of Rural Arterials, Urban Principal Arterials and all National Highway System routes. The data set covers the 48 contiguous States plus the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. The nominal scale of the data set is 1:100,000 with a maximal positional error of ˜80 meters.

The accuracy of the fields FCLASS and STRAHNET from the description section of the line shapefile is consistent with State supplied information for the years 1992 and 1993. The accuracy of the fields MILES, KM, SIGN1, and NHS from the description section of the line shapefile is consistent with State supplied information for the years 1992 through 2001. All other attributes in the description of the link table are unverified.

Data originally released by U.S. Department of Transportation - Bureau of Transportation in 2001. Data was downloaded by GeoPlan in shapefile format from the Department of Transportation (http://www.bts.gov/gis/ntatlas/networks.html) in 2002. When received, data was in the following projection: Geographic, Datum: NAD 83, Spheroid: GRS80, Units: Decimal Degrees. The shapefile was then clipped to the State of Florida, projected to FGDL Albers HPGN, all character items were upcased and DESCRIPT item was added based on Sign1.
