FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2004
TITLE: NITROGEN FERTILIZER SALES FOR THE COUNTIES OF FLORIDA
Geodataset Name: NFER90 Geodataset Type: COVER Geodataset Feature: POLYGON
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This shapefile contains estimates of nitrogen-fertilizer sales for the state of Florida in 1990 as reported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1990) and by Jerald Fletcher (West Virginia University, written commun., 1992). Nitrogen-fertilizer sales estimates in this coverage are reported for each county polygon in tons of actual nutrient sold (inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, and potash) as distinct from total tons of fertilizer product.

USER NOTES:
The data are summarized for fertilizer years (i.e. the 1987 fertilizer year runs from July 1, 1986 to June 30, 1987). The polygons representing county boundaries in the conterminous United States, as well as lakes, estuaries, and other nonland-area features were derived from the Digital Line Graph (DLG) file representing the 1:2,000,000-scale map in the National Atlas of the United States (1970). The nitrogen-fertilizer sales estimates in this coverage are intended for use in estimating regional fertilizer sales, and in producing visual displays and mapping relative rates of fertilizer sales across broad regions of the United States. A note concerning scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
In 2001, the GeoPlan Center downloaded this data in shapefile format from the Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse http://www.gis.state.ga.us/Clearinghouse/clearinghouse.html. When received, the geographic extent of the data was the Southeastern U.S. and it was in the following projection: Albers, Datum: NAD27, Spheroid: CLARK1866, Units: Meters. The data was then reprojected to FGDL Albers HPGN and clipped to the State of Florida. DESCRIPT item added based on CNTYNAME and lowercase characters within the attribute table were upcased.
