TITLE: MINERAL AND METAL OPERATIONS
Geodataset Name: MINPLT Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POINT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains the locations of mineral and metal operations in the United States. The data represent commodities covered by the Minerals Information Team (MIT) of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the operations are those considered active in 1997 and surveyed by the MIT. DATA SOURCE(S): United States Geological Survey SCALE OF ORIGINAL SOURCE MAPS: UNKNOWN DATE OF AUTOMATION OR SOURCE: 1998 GEODATASET EXTENT: State of Florida

FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES:
ITEM ITEM DESCRIPTION SHAPE Data attribute inherent to the ESRI shapefile format, which defines the data as a point, polyline, or polygon. SITE_NAME The name of the facility. COMPANY_NAME The name of the company which operates the facility. The mineral(s) and/or metal(s) produced or processed by the facility. COMMODITY The mineral(s) and/or metal(s) produced or processed by the facility. LATITUDE Angular distance measured on a meridian north or south from the equator. LONGITUDE Angular distance between the plane of a meridian east or west from the plane of the meridian of Greenwich. PLANT_MIN Whether the facility is a plant or a mine. M = The facility is a mine P = The facility is a plant M/P = The facility is both a mine and a plant COUNTY County Name the facility is located within DESCRIPT FGDL added item based on COMMODITY
USER NOTES:
The data can be used to conduct geographic analysis on national and large regional scales. The digital data set of the Minerals Information Team is used to create electronic and hard copy maps that depict various mineral or metal mine and/or processing locations on a national map. The data can be used to conduct geographic analysis on national and large regional scales. Additional mineral and metal operations information can be obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Information Team web page at: http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/ A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html
FGDL QUALITY ASSURANCE STATUS:
-Projected data to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below). -Clipped to the State of Florida -DESCRIPT item added based on COMMODITY -Upcased all character records.
DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
GeoPlan downloaded this data in shapefile format from the USGS website at: http://mrdata.usgs.gov/sddpftp.html. When received, the data was in the following projection: Geographic, Datum: NAD 27, Spheroid: Clarke 1866, Units: Decimal Degrees. The shapefile was clipped to the State of Florida boundary, and projected to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below). All character items in the attribute tablewere upcased and the DESCRIPT item was added based on the item COMMODITY.
