Item Description
OBJECTID Internal feature number.

Shape Feature geometry.

GNIS_NAME The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and associated areas, both current and historical, but not including roads and highways. The database also contains geographic names in Antarctica. The database holds the Federally recognized name of each feature and defines the location of the feature by state, county, USGS topographic map, and geographic coordinates. Other feature attributes include names or spellings other than the official name, feature designations, feature class, historical and descriptive information, and for some categories of features the geometric boundaries. The database assigns a unique feature identifier, a random number, that is a key for accessing, integrating, or reconciling GNIS data with other data sets. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic feature names information.

HECTARES A calculated value derived from the shape area field and expressed in hectares.

RESOURCE_ The resource type to which the feature belongs. Acceptable values are small lake or large lake.

LAKECODE The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Reach File (Version 3.0), known as RF3, is a national hydrologic database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the 3.2 million stream segments or "reaches" that comprise the Country's surface water drainage system. RF3 is being developed by the EPA's Office of Water from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 1:100,000 scale hydrographic data. The RF3 production process assigns a unique reach code to each stream segment contained within the USGS hydrographic and determines the upstream/downstream relationships of each reach, allowing them to be connected together to form a national hydrologic transport network. The reach codes provide a common nomenclature for Federal and State reporting of surface water conditions as required under the Clean Water Act. In addition, the hydrologic transport network defined within RF3 enables the modeling of waterborne pollution associated with both point and non-point sources.

REPORTUNIT Reporting Unit Zone.

DESCRIPT Based on RESOURCE_ and GNIS_NAME.

FGDLAQDATE The date FGDL acquired the data from the source.

AUTOID Unique ID added by GeoPlan

USER NOTES:
The data is kept consistent with industry practices.
The data is maintained on an annual basis and is continuously updated to prevent omissions or errors.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.

The purpose of this layer is to represent the small and large lakes coverage at the
end of the year and to include exclusions and additions or deletions of features
during that year. Selections of features are made for the following years listframe.
The resulting coverage therefore represents the base layer for users to reference for
in-house reconnaissance of potential sample locations for the Status Monitoring
Network.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
Features from the 1:24,000-scale National Hydrography Dataset (24k NHD)
"Waterbody" layer are used as a base coverage for the Lakes coverage in the
Watershed Monitoring Surface Water List Frame geodatabase.
Process Date: 20120901

WMS staff conducted a manual review of the statewide coverage via office reconnaissance using aerial photography in an attempt to remove features that appear unsampleable. Criteria which may disqualify a feature include: artificial waterbodies (roadside borrow pits, residential stormwater retention/detention ponds, restoration areas, etc.), dry/wetland/low water areas, large land owner refusal properties, saline/estuarine conditions (via field observation or ancillary GIS data), inaccessibility, or any other similar staff recommend exclusion - including field reconnaissance. Process Date: 20120901
In an attempt to reduce the dataset to features that are most likely permanent, non-ephemeral/non-intermittent, non-wetland features, lakes whose size fall below the threshold of 4.0 hectares (40,000 sq.m) are not included in the Lakes coverage. Attribution is applied to each feature in the Lakes coverage to classify the dataset into two categories: 1) Small Lake - feature area >= 4.0 hectares and < 10 hectares, and 2) Lare Lake - feature area >= 10.0 hectares Process Date: 20120901
A finalized dataset is sent to project managers to perform a final review of the Lakes resource. Once these reviews are completed, random points are obtained from the statewide coverage using R (statistical modeling software). Those random locations are sampled by field staff, and reconnaissance is applied to update this dataset for sequent years sampling. Process Date: 20120901
Obtained new data from Watershed Monitoring Section (DEAR) and added in SDE. Data published in DataMiner and MapDirect. Process Date: 20120917
Obtained updated data from Watershed Monitoring Section (DEAR) and updated the same in SDE/DataMiner. Process Date: 20140303
The base coverage for small lakes and large lakes were locationally compared with the 2014 coverages submitted for the GRTS selection process to ensure only those features that were used as a basis for selection are represented in the updated years coverage. Features that were excluded as wrong resource were removed from the 2014 coverage for small lakes and large lakes. A template of the current schema for the DEP.WMS_LAKES_RESOURCE was copied from the SDE and then features contained within the "Flowing Waters" feature class within the Listframe geodatabase were filtered for non-excluded small and large lake objects which were then loaded into the template. The feature class was then exported to a shapefile and metadata were added to the shapefile prior to submitting to the GIS Librarian for processing the new coverage to the SDE. Process Date: 20141203
Updated data obtained from DEAR and updated the same in the GIS library Process Date: 20141204
Updating the lakes resource list frame for 2016 Process Date: 20161102
Updated data obtained from DEAR and added the same in the GIS library. Process Date: 20161108
Features that were excluded as wrong resource were removed from the 2017 coverage for small lakes and large lakes. A template of the current schema for the DEP.WMS_LAKES_RESOURCE was copied from the SDE and then features contained within the "Lakes" feature class within the Listframe geodatabase were filtered for non-excluded small and large lake objects which were then loaded into the template. The feature class was then exported to a file geodatabase and metadata were added to the file geodatabase prior to submitting to the GIS Librarian for processing the new coverage to the SDE. Process Date: 20171215
Updated data obtained from DEAR and added the same in the GIS library. Process Date: 20171219
The GeoPlan Center downloaded the WMS Lakes Resource 2017 dataset on August 1st, 2018 from the FDEP Data Portal: Florida Department of Environmental Protection Geospatial Open Data: http://geodata.dep.state.fl.us/ http://geodata.dep.state.fl.us/datasets/wms-lakes-resource-2017 Please Note: Data is also available via the FTP website: http://publicfiles.dep.state.fl.us/otis/gis/data/wms_lakes_resource.zip WMS_LAKES_RESOURCE.zip WMS_LAKES_RESOURCE.gdb The GDB layer was exported to shapefile. The dataset's projection was redefined to FGDL Albers. During the QA/QC process the following tasks were undertaken: - Redefined the dataset's projection from FDEP Albers to FGDL Albers. - Deleted the OBJECTID field. - Uppercased all records in the table. - A DESCRIPT field was added based on RESOURCE_ and GNIS_NAME. - A FGDLAQDATE field was added based on date downloaded from source. - Renamed file from WMS_LAKES_RESOURCE to LAKES_RESOURCE_DEC17.
