This dataset contains primary lakes in north and central Florida developed from GNIS, USGS 1:24k Hydrography data, 1994 DOQQs, and USGS DRGs and reviewed by DEP and WMD personnel. Please Note: The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD1:24K) statewide download of March 17th 2015, includes all surface waters in the state. Only a collection of named lakes or reservoirs extracted from the NHD are used in this layer.
Provide matching point and polygon lake coverages, most with verified names.

This coverage includes every major lake but is not a complete coverage of the lakes in Florida. South Florida is not included in this coverage. Lakes data will likely be updated in the future to include agency developed waterbody IDs for each lake. Also, USGS GNIS naming board will be given the chance to check and approve the determined lake names. If/as this effort is accomplished, GNIS IDs may be added to the attribute data. FDEP: This data is intended to be used for general informational and planning purposes, and is not appropriate for legal and/or cadastral purposes. FDEP: The data set is NOT a survey document and should not be utilized as such. FDEP GIS data is provided as a public service. FDEP makes every effort to provide accurate and complete data. Spatial and Attribute Information
GNIS Lake Points were used as reference points to find the lakes. The GNIS points were then checked against the 1995 Digital Ortho Quadrangles (DOQs). The points were then moved if necessary to represent the center of the lakes, or the point most likely to remain water during drought. Other points were added to represent lakes that did not have GNIS points. The names of the points were then checked against the Digital Raster Graphics and other resources. The USGS Hydrography layer was then clipped to the point coverage, so that there was a layer of just the polygons that intersected the points. The polygon coverage was then cleaned up to match the 1995 DOQs and given the appropriate name from the point coverage. The lakes that did not have names were sent to the respective Water Management District lake biologists for QA/QC. Additional QA/QC included the following: A LINK field was developed to ensure point + polygon correspondence 373 Duplicate Names were investigated 252 names had blank spaces before the Name that had to be removed County Names were compared to DEP Standards Unnecessary fields were removed
Devan Branscum added another lake and modified several others at the request of Lou Ley in the Central District.
Devan Branscum added 9 lakes and modified others at the request of Lou Ley in the Central District.
Devan Branscum added more lakes at the request of Lou Ley in the Central District.
Devan Branscum added 2 lakes (Lake Orienta and Lake Seminary) at the request of Lou Ley in the Central District.
There are 1058 records that were removed from the 4329 found in the original DataMiner Lakes layer. 596 new lake features were collected from the NHD (National Hydrography Dataset) and added to the Dataminer SDE Lakes layer. Those NHD files can be found in the following directory: \\gisraid\gissub \gopalan_h\NHDinGEO\24k on the Floridadep network.
Updated dataset acquired by BIS/GIS Section from Ron Hughes and inserted in ArcSDE. Metadata updated
The GeoPlan Center downloaded the Florida Lakes dataset on August 1st, 2018 from the FDEP Data Portal: Florida Department of Environmental Protection Geospatial Open Data: http://geodata.dep.state.fl.us/ http://geodata.dep.state.fl.us/datasets/florida-lakes Please Note: Data is also available via the FTP server: http://publicfiles.dep.state.fl.us/otis/gis/data/lakes_areas.zip LAKES_AREAS.zip LAKES_AREAS.gdb The GDB layer was exported to shapefile. The dataset's projection was redefined to FGDL Albers. During the QA/QC process the following tasks were undertaken: - Redefined the dataset's projection from FDEP Albers to FGDL Albers. - Deleted the OBJECTID field. - Uppercased all records in the table. - A DESCRIPT field was added based on NAME. - A FGDLAQDATE field was added based on date downloaded from source. - Renamed file from LAKES_AREAS to LAKES_AREAS_SEP05.

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using, modifying, contributing or distributing the materials. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation.
