This dataset is a combination of geocoded cemetery addresses from several online sources and centroids from the new SHPO Cemeteries shapefile.
SHPO DATA INFORMATION TO THE USER:
DATA VERSION: April 2005: This data set updates and replaces all previous versions of the Florida Master Site File historical cemeteries data layer. This version incorporates newly recorded cemeteries and updates to previously recorded ones. This is the first version of FMSF historical cemeteries GIS data layer to be released in Shapefile format.
Data from the Florida Master Site File are continually updated. This data layer is only current as of the date of this document. Contact the Florida Master Site File for updated data layers.
DATA SOURCE: Source data were created by the Division of Historical Resources. The original boundary data are based on field recording forms and site plots submitted to the Site File. Florida Master Site File site folders contain an historic cemetery form with descriptive location data, photographs and any site plots provided by the surveyor.
DERIVATION METHODS FOR DATA: This data layer was created using on-screen (heads-up) digitizing of cemetery locations in Arc/Info. Scanned, georeferenced, 1:24,000 scale USGS quadrangles in geographic coordinates (lat./long., NAD27) were used as the background reference images. In many cases the cemeteries already appear on the quad maps.
LIMITATIONS OF THE DATA/WARNINGS TO THE USER: The historic cemetery data are based on field reports which have been submitted by many and varied individuals, groups, institutions, and cultural resource firms. Submissions to the Site File are sometimes accepted from amateurs as well as professionals. The locations are only as accurate as the locational information submitted to the Site File by the site recorder. The accuracy of submitted information cannot always be verified. The absence of a cultural resource in this data layer does not preclude the existence of an unrecorded resource in the field. The cemeteries recorded at the Site File represent only a fraction of the historic cemeteries present statewide.
The locations of archaeological sites, historic structures, unmarked human burials, cemeteries, and other cultural features contained in this and other Site File data layers are for resource management, law enforcement, and research purposes only. State law protects archaeological remains on state owned and controlled lands section 267.13, Florida Statutes. State law protects human burial sites on all lands sections 872.02 and 872.05, Florida Statutes.

What is Geocoding? Geocoding is term used to describe the act of address matching. Geocoding is the process of finding a geographic location (x, y point) for an address (such as street number and name, city, state, and ZIP Code) on a map. Geocoding is based off the typical address scheme for the US, in which one side of the street contains even house numbers while the other side of the street contains odd house numbers.
The geocoding process uses an algorithm to find the geographic location of addresses. First, a street segment is identified using the zip code and street name. Next, the geographic location of the address is matched using the building number to determine how far down the street and on which side of the street the building is located.
Geocoding Accuracy The locational accuracy of geocoded addresses may vary from urban to rural areas due to the algorithm used to generate the geographic locations of addresses. The algorithm assumes that the size of parcels are equivalent along a road route. This assumption tends to be more consistent in urban areas, where the size of parcels vary less than in rural areas. Consequently, the results of geocoded addresses in urban areas are usually more reliable than those in rural areas.
For example, the locational accuracy of rural addresses can be slightly off because some parcels along a rural route may be 15 acres while others may be 2.5 acres, but the geocoding algorithm assumes that the addresses are distributed evenly along the route.

Process Steps for Yellow Pages FL Cemetery Locations: -Searched for cemetery addresses in http://www.yellowpages.com -Downloaded cemetery information Selected cemetery addresses under following categories: Pets & Vets Pet Services - Pet Cemeteries (41) Real Estate Land Subdividers & Developers - Cemeteries (321) Process Steps for D'ADDEZIO.com Information: -Searched for cemetery addresses in D'ADDEZIO.com -Selected cemetery addresses under following categories: Florida Cemeteries http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/junction/CJ-FL-NDX.html -Downloaded cemetery information. -All addresses from sections above were copied and pasted into a text file, which was then formatted so that it could be imported into Excel and converted to a database file format. -The addresses were geocoded against ARC Logistics Route GDT Roads Shapefile created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection Process Steps for State Historic Preservation Office Information: -SHPO Cemetery information was gathered from cetroids taken from the latest SHIPO Cemeteries shapefile: -Historic Cemeteries Gis Data Layer Florida Division Of Historical Resources October 2005 -This dataset contains historic cemetery boundaries and basic cemetery attributes as recorded at the Florida Master Site File. -A shapefile was created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection Process Steps for Cemetery Transcription Library Information: -Searched for cemetery addresses in Cemetery Transcription Library -Selected cemetery addresses under following categories: http://www.interment.net/us/fl/ -Downloaded cemetery information from different counties. -This information was then mapped using the Cemetery's Latitude and Longitude Coordinates and a shapefile created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection Process Steps For St Johns County Cemetery Information: -Data was acquired through the County GIS Department. -A shapefile was created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection Process Steps For Marion County Cemetery Information: -Data was acquired through the County GIS Department. -A shapefile was created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection Process Steps For Orange County Cemetery Information: -Data was acquired through the County GIS Department. -A shapefile was created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection Process Steps For Lake County Cemetery Information: -Data was acquired through the County GIS Department. -A shapefile was created using FGDL Albers HPGN map projection -All the above data was given a new field call SOURCE and the Source field was calculated based on the source of the original information. -The all datasets except the SHPO Data, where then combined together and unnecessary fields were deleted. -Duplicates Spatial Fields were removed using an ArcView Extension: "Remove Spatial Duplicates" -This shapefile along with the one containing the SHPO Data were loaded into ArcMap, duplicates occurring between the new combined shapefile and the SHPO dataset where removed from the combined dataset visually. -The two datasets where then merged together and the shapefile was created using the FGDL Albers HPGN map projection -This update consists of changes made to Volusia County, Florida in 2005. The old geocoded data was removed from the statewide layer and the newly acquired data was appended. The AUTOID was calculated for records containing no old AUTOID number Process Steps for Super Pages FL Cemetery Locations: -Searched for cemetery addresses in http://www.superpages.com Selected cemetery addresses under following categories: # Cemeteries & Memorial Parks * Cemeteries & Crematories (1879) * Mausoleums (12) -Downloaded cemetery information (A1) For Volusia County, FL the 2005 GC_CEMETERY statewide geocoded point data was removed. This data was replaced with more accurate point data received directly from Volusia County and/or a company working with Volusia County in May of 2005. (A5) Some Information from the 2004 geocoded data set was retained; this data was retained for three reasons: 1. The Yellow Pages and Super Pages Online are paid advertising sites, some facilities may wish to discontinue their advertising with those companies but they may still exist at that address/location (i.e. Churches etc). 2. The address might have changed slightly (i.e. suite number, building number, or zip code) which may have affected the addresses ability to be geocoded with the 2005 GDT roads dataset. 3. The facility no longer exists. Because facilities in reasons one and two may still exist in the real world all the 2004 geocoded features that were not reproduced in the 2005 geocode update were re-geocoded against the 2005 GDT roads dataset. These facilities were then added to the 2005 geocoded dataset. Facilities that are part of this scenario are represented with a value of 'NIN' (Not In New) in the field called FLAG. -Socio-Cultural Effect data fields and definitions were added. FLAG, UPDATE_DAY, AUTOID, NAME, ADDRESS, CITY, ZIPCODE, OPERATING, OP_CLASS, TYPE, YEAR, FGDLAQDATE -For facilities that previously existed the permanent auto identification number [auto id] was carried over from the 2004 SCE base data to the 2005 SCE updates. For new facilities autoids were created. -Total records = 1443
