USER NOTES:
The FNAI data are designed to provide information about significant natural resources for use by the Regional Planning Councils (RPCs) in preparing their Strategic Policy Plans. Areas of Conservation Interest (ACIs) are sites that support currently unprotected examples of important natural resources; the ACIs are delineated into three categories. Lands already on Florida's Conservation and Recreation lands (CARL) and Save Our Rivers (SOR) project lists are excluded. Areas of Conservation Interest Category B were identified primarily from aerial photographic interpretation of natural communities by FNAI scientist and from input during the Regional Ecological Workshops (REW) held in each Regional Planning Council during 1993 and 1994. Participants in REW included, but were not limited to: county foresters, Water Management Districts, county Planning and Parks offices, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regional offices, DEP district Biologists, county Soil Conservation Service employees, Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission regional biologists, local chapters of the Florida Native Plant Society, National Audobon Society, Sierra Club, and other environmental groups, federal agencies involved in natural resource issues, Nature 2000 symposium participants, P-2000 map charette attendees, CARL liaison staff members, and academic researchers. Staff from RPCs were asked to provide additional input about locally knowledgeable persons. Participants were asked to identify rare and threatened natural communities, endangered species habitats, endangered plant communities, outstanding natural areas, and other outstanding natural features within the RPC area and to mark sites that they wished to nominate for consideration as ACIs on county highway maps.
The ACIs presented on these maps are preliminary. Areas of Conservation Interest Category B sites are considered to have higher priority than Category C sites based on the quality, size, and rarity of their natural communities. Although reliable information was obtained from aerial photographic interpretation and regional workshops, most of these sites have not been field-surveyed, and information from the FNAI data base and Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission priority wildlife habitat analysis have not been fully incorporated. Verification of the current conditions of Category A and B sites is a major ongoing task of FNAI. FNAI will continue to review and refine the priority rankings of individual sites, based on additional criteria that fully incorporate information from its data base, as the regional ecological analyses continue. This dataset was completed in March 1995; however, FNAI continually revises the data set. For critical decisions relying upon these data, contact FNAI directly for up-to-date information.
Caution: The quantity and quality of data collected by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory are dependent on the research and observations of many individuals and organizations. In most cases, species and natural community occurrences are not the result of comprehensive or site-specific field surveys; many natural areas in Florida have never been thoroughly surveyed. The FNAI data base represents a compilation of information extracted from published and unpublished literature, museums and herbaria, field surveys, personal communications, and other sources.
Records for new occurrences of plants and animals are continuously being added to the database, and older occurrence records may change as new information is gathered. For these reasons, FNAI cannot provide a definitive statement on the presence, absence, or condition of biological elements in any part of Florida. These maps should never be regarded as final statements on the elements or areas being considered, nor should they be substituted for on-site surveys required for environmental assessments.
