FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2004

TITLE: LARGE URBAN BOUNDARIES

Geodataset Name: FLURB
Geodataset Type: SHAPE
Geodataset Feature: POLYGON

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This dataset contains the Adjusted Urbanized Areas database that is a geographic database
consisting of Adjusted Urbanized Areas in the State of Florida for 1993; wherein, the AUA contain
the state-portion of adjusted CENSUS urban boundaries for urban areas with a 1990 CENSUS
population greater than 50,000 people.

FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES:

ITEM ITEM DESCRIPTION
SHAPE Data attribute inherent to the ESRI shapefile format,
which defines the data as a point, polyline, or polygon.
AREA Area of polygon
PERMIMETER Perimeter of polygons
URBCODE The URBCODE provides the 3 digit HPMS Urbanized Area Code for the adjusted
	      urbanized area.

CENCODE The CENCODE provides the equivalent 4 digit CENSUS assigned Urbanized Area
Code for the adjusted urbanized area.

NAME The NAME field consists of a descriptive name for the polygon feature.

USER NOTES:

An urbanized area (UA) consists of densely settled territory that contains 50,000 or
more people. A UA may contain both place and nonplace territory. The U.S. Census
Bureau delineates UAs to provide a better separation of urban and rural territory,
population, and housing in the vicinity of large places. At least 35,000 people in a UA
must live in an area that is not part of a military reservation.

For the 1990 census, the U.S. Census Bureau assigned a four-digit UA code
based on the MA (Metropolitan Area) codes.
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not
suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure
you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county
level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.

1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.

1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered
suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for
projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with
data documentation. For additional information, see the References section
and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more
information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at:

FGDL QUALITY ASSURANCE STATUS:

-Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below)
-Extent set to the State of Florida
-Upcased all character records
-DESCRIPT item added based on NAME
-Dropped old internal coverage items: FLURBAN, FLURBAN_ID, FLUZA_, FLUZA_ID

REFERENCES:

These databases were compiled by members of the Geographic Information Systems Group at the
University of Tennessee, Pellissippi Research Institute in Knoxville, Tennessee for the Federal
Highway Administration, Office of Environment and Planning, HEP-11.

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:

This dataset was downloaded as a coverage by the GeoPlan Center from the FHWA Office of
Intermodal and Statewide Programs webpage at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/hep10/data/.
Data was projected to FGDL Albers HPGN, descript item was added based on NAME, lowercase
character items within attribute table were upcased, and old internal coverage items were
dropped. When received, data was in UTM projection, Datum: NAD83, Spheroid: GRS1980,
Units: Meters.
