Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains the official boundaries for the three National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERR) that lie within the boundaries of Florida. This dataset is an update to the FGDL layer FLNERR_JUL06.shp.
Purpose:
The data was created to serve as base information for use in GIS systems for a variety of planning and analytical purposes.
Supplemental_Information:
National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NEERS) In Florida: <http://nerrs.noaa.gov/>
Apalachicola, FL The Apalachicola Bay Reserve protects one of the most productive estuarine systems in the Northern Hemisphere, where the economic value of the natural resources and pristine conditions depend on the region’s biological diversity. The 246,000-acre reserve on the Florida panhandle is about 75 miles southeast of Tallahassee and 60 miles east of Panama City. Included within the Reserve's management area are two barrier islands and a portion of a third, the lower 52 miles of the Apalachicola River and its floodplain, portions of adjoining uplands, and the Apalachicola Bay estuarine, riverine and floodplain systems . Apalachicola Bay is a major forage area for trans-gulf migratory bird species and supports a local fishing industry worth $14-16 million annually which directly supports up to 85 percent of the local population.
Guana Tolomato Matanzas, FL The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses approximately 73,352 acres of salt marsh and mangrove tidal wetlands, oyster bars, estuarine lagoons, upland habitat and offshore seas in Northeast Florida. The GTM Reserve is located in the East Florida subregion, south of Jacksonville and sandwiching St. Augustine. It contains the northernmost extent of mangrove habitat on the east coast of the United States, some of the highest dunes in Florida, measuring 30-40 feet, and one of the few remaining "inlets" in northeast Florida not protected by a jetty thus presenting an easy study of what an inlet might have looked like in the past. The coastal waters of the GTM Reserve are also important calving grounds for the endangered Right Whale.
Rookery Bay, FL The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a prime example of a nearly pristine subtropical mangrove forested estuary. Located south of Naples on the Florida gulf coast, the Rookery Bay Reserve is in the West Florida subregion of the West Indian Biogeographic Region. The total estimated surface area of open waters within the boundary is 70,000 acres, 64 percent of the reserve. The remaining 40,000 acres are primarily mangroves, fresh to brackish water marshes, and upland habitats. A myriad of wildlife, including 150 species of birds, and many threatened and endangered animals such as the Florida panther, thrive in the estuarine environment and surrounding upland hammocks and scrub in the Reserve.

Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) - GTM_RB_2007.shp Original Data Abstract: This feature class contains all property boundaries that are part of the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) as defined by the NOAA as of December 2008. This file serves as an update to the original Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve boundary shapefile generated with the updated shapefiles of each of the three managed areas comprising the file and the original shapefiles of other agency lands within the reserve. This updated boundary was created from the original shapefile boundary in the Florida DEP data catalog Aquatic Preserves shapefiles and the legal descriptions in the management plans. Areas managed by other agencies created their related shapefiles. Information on each of those files will need to be obtained from each agency. The update serves to represent the boundary with the Mean High Water line more accurately than represented in the past. The boundary extent of the mean high water line is from visual interpretation of aerial photography from 2007 DOQQ's with 1 foot image resolution and does not represent an accurate survey of the mean high water line and therefore must be interpretated accordingly. This boundary does not represent legal jurisdiction as would result from a formal mean high water survey from a licensed engineering firm. The mean high water line was visually determined by digitizing the extent of salt marsh vegetation (Spartina alterniflora, Juncus roemarianus, Batis maritmima, etc) into the upland areas in conjunction with the limits of the leagal boundary as detailed in the supplemental information of this metadata document. The boundary was delineated on the 2007 DOQQ's at a display scale of 1:1,200.

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (RKBNERR) - RKB_RB_2006.shp Original Data Abstract: The boundary represents the area managed by Rookery Bay NERR as described in the Florida Statutes (Chapter 258). The managed area is composed of the Rookery Bay Aquatic Preserve, Cape Romano/Ten Thousand Islands Aquatic Preserve and Deltona Settlement Agreement Lands.

Process_Description: Based on the legal descriptions in the Statutes, appropriate section lines were hand digitized following the section/township/range map which were digitized from the USGS Quad map. Deltona settlement property boundary was then merged to the Statute boundary. The high tide line in the vicinity of the Ten Thousand Islands was derived from an FGDL file. This high tide line was merged to the Statute boundary and the upper statute line in the eastern half of the original boundary was removed. This was done since there has not been a survey to determine the official high tide line in the Ten Thousand Islands. Process_Date: 2000

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.
Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. A note about data scale:
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.
1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.
Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: <http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html>
