Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains information from the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. FIA is a continuing endeavor mandated by Congress in the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 and the McSweeney-McNary Forest Research Act of 1928. FIA's primary objective is to determine the extent, condition, volume, growth, and depletions of timber on the Nation's forest land. Points within the dataset represent approximate coordinates for every plot location in the database in the State of Florida. Due to privacy rights the coordinates have been adjusted and are generally within one mile of the actual location. FIA reports on status and trends in forest area and location; in the species, size, and health of trees; in total tree growth, mortality, and removals by harvest; in wood production and utilization rates by various products; and in forest land ownership.
Purpose:
The FIA Program of the U.S. Forest Service provides the information needed to assess America's forests. As the Nation's continuous forest census, the FIA program projects how forests are likely to appear 10 to 50 years from now. This enables the USDA forest Service to evaluate whether current forest management practices are sustainable in the long run and to assess whether current policies will allow the next generation to enjoy America's forests as we do today.
Supplemental_Information:
The information contained in this dataset is a subset of the information available within the larger Forest Inventory and Analysis Database (FIADB) available at <http://fiatools.fs.fed.us/fiadb-downloads/datamart.html>. To use the FIADB effectively, users should acquire a basic understanding of FIA sampling and estimation procedures provided in the Forest Inventory and Analysis Database: Database Description and Users Manual Version 4.0 for Phase 2 available at <http://fia.fs.fed.us/library/database-documentation/>

Process_Description:
GeoPlan downloaded the data via the FIA DataMart located at <http://fiatools.fs.fed.us/fiadb-downloads/datamart.html> in comma delimited format (.csv). (1) Datasets within the Forest Inventory and Analysis database utilized were the FL_PLOT.CSV, FL_COND.CSV, and FL_POP_STRATUM.CSV files. (2) The CSV tables were converted to .DBF format and joined to the FL_PLOT table based on the plot identifier number. (3) The newly joined table was exported and converted to a shapefile using the add XY tool in ArcMAP. (4) The shapefile was projected from WGS 1984 to FGDL Albers and renamed to flfia09.shp (5) The following fields were changed, added, or dropped from the FL_PLOT.CSV table;

These records had no Latitude or Longitude data and therefore could not be generated as accurate points. (9) Added item CNTY_PLT based on the FIPS county code and the plot number for each plot. The purpose of this was to get around the fact that plot numbers repeated in different couties. The CNTY_PLT item is therefore a unique identifier for each plot, and can be used in place of the PLT_CN item. (10) Added NO_TREES field representing on the number of trees over one inch in diameter on each plot. Field derived from the FL_TREES.CSV table in the FIA database. A frequency function was performed on the table with PLT_CN being the case field. This returned the number of recorded trees on each plot. (11) Added the DESCRIPT item based on FORTYCD item. (12) Added item FGDLAQDATE based on the date GeoPlan acquired the data.

Remeasurement period. The number of years between measurements for remeasured plots. This attribute is null (blank) for new plots or remeasured plots that are not used for growth, removals, or mortality estimates. For data processed with NIMS, REMPER is the number of years between measurements (to the nearest 0.1 year). For data processed with systems other than NIMS, remeasurement period is based on the number of growing seasons between measurements. Allocation of parts of the growing season by month is different for each FIA program. Contact the appropriate FIA program for information on how this is done for a particular State. NOTE: it is not valid to use REMPER to estimate periodic change.

Attribute_Label: FORTYPCD
Attribute_Definition:
Forest type code. This is the forest type used for reporting purposes. It is primarily derived using a computer algorithm, except when less than 25 percent of the plot samples a particular forest condition. Usually, FORTYPCD equals FORTYPCDCALC. In certain situations, however, the result from the algorithm (FORTYPCDCALC) is overridden by the field call. The field-recorded forest type code (FLDTYPCD) is stored in this attribute when less than 25 percent of the plot samples the forested condition (CONDPROP_UNADJ < 0.25). Situations of undersampling may cause this attribute to differ from FORTYPCDCALC. Nonstocked forest land is land that currently has less than 10 percent stocking but formerly met the definition of forest land. Forest conditions meeting this definition have few, if any, trees sampled. In these instances, the algorithm cannot assign a specific forest type and the resulting forest type code is 999, meaning nonstocked.

Attribute:
Attribute_Label: STDAGE
Attribute_Definition:
Stand age. For annual inventories (PLOT.MANUAL > 1.0), stand age is equal to the field-recorded stand age (FLDAGE) with some exceptions. One exception is if FLDAGE = 999, then stand age is computed. When FLDAGE = 998, STDAGE is blank (null) because no trees were cored in the field. Another exception is that RMRS always computes stand age using field recorded tree ages from trees in the calculated stand size class. If no tree ages are available, then RMRS sets this attribute equal to FLDAGE. For all inventories, nonstocked stands have STDAGE set to 0. In periodic inventories, stand age is determined using local procedures. Annual inventory data will contain stand ages assigned to the nearest year. For some older inventories, stand age was set to 10-year classes for stands < 100 years old, 20-year age classes for stands between 100 and 200 years, and 100-year age classes if older than 200 years. These classes were converted to store the midpoint of the age class in years. Blank (null) values in the periodic data (PLOT.MANUAL < 1.0) indicate that the stand was recorded as mixed age on forested condition classes. Age is difficult to measure and therefore STDAGE may have large measurement errors.

Attribute_Definition:
Stand-size class code. A classification of the predominant (based on stocking) diameter class of live trees within the condition assigned using an algorithm. Large diameter trees are at least 11.0 inches diameter for hardwoods and at least 9.0 inches diameter for softwoods. Medium diameter trees are at least 5.0 inches diameter and smaller than large diameter trees. Small diameter trees are less than 5.0 inches diameter. When less than 25 percent of the plot samples the forested condition (CONDPROP_UNADJ < 0.25), this attribute is set to the equivalent field-recorded stand size class (FLDSZCD). Populated for the NCRS periodic plots that were measured as "nonforest with trees" (e.g., wooded pasture, windbreaks).

Attribute_Definition:
Site productivity class code. A classification of forest land in terms of inherent capacity to grow crops of industrial wood. Identifies the potential growth in cubic feet/acre/year and is based on the culmination of mean annual increment of fully stocked natural stands. For data stored in the database that were processed outside of NIMS, this variable may be assigned based on the site productivity determined with the site trees, or from some other source, but the actual source of the site productivity class code is not known. For data processed with NIMS, this variable may either be assigned based on the site trees available for the plot, or, if no valid site trees are available, this variable is set equal to SITECLCDEST, a default value that is either an estimated or predicted site productivity class. If SITECLCDEST is used to populate SITECLCD, the variable ITECL_METHOD is set to 6.

Site index for the condition. This represents the average total length in feet that dominant and co-dominant trees are expected to attain in well stocked, even-aged stands at the specified base age (SIBASE). The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.
Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. A note about data scale:
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.
1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.
Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: <http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html>
