Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains a point coverage of dams which originally was derived from the national inventory of dams data base (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1982). The coverage includes locations of and selected characteristics of reservoirs and controlled natural lakes that have normal capacities of at least 5,000 acre-feet or maximum capacities of at least 25,000 acre-feet and that were completed as of January 1, 1988.
Purpose:
This coverage is intended as a thematic data layer showing the location of dams and certain attributes of the structures. Information contained in the coverage has been used for several applications. Location, size, and owner of structures are depicted on a map of surface-water development (Hitt, 1985). Location and other selected characteristics of structures are listed in table 3 of Ruddy and Hitt (1990). The information was the basis for graphics in two National Water Summary reports. The 1985 National Water Summary shows maps of surface-water development. The 1987 National Water Summary shows graphs of cumulative reservoir storage.

The information in this coverage has been reviewed by field personnel several times. The file initially was reviewed and verified as part of the compilation of the map of surface-water development (Hitt, 1985). USGS District Offices, nine other Federal agencies, and five State agencies reviewed the location, owner, and size of structures under their jurisdiction. These early reviews occurred between 1981 and 1984. Additional reviews of the file were made by USGS District Offices during the preparation of the State articles for the 1985 and 1987 National Water Summary reports (U.S. Geological Survey, 1986, 1990). During these reviews by the USGS District Offices, data on the normal and maximum capacities were corrected as necessary by the reviewing offices.

THE DATA INCLUDED IN THIS APPLICATION ARE BASED ON INTERPRETATION OF AVAILABLE INFORMATION AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS LEGALLY BINDING.

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale data sets are not suitable for some projects, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale data sets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries.

1:100000 scale data sets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale data sets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate. Relied on the integrity of the attribute information within the original data layer. However, during the QA process a new item, DESCRIPT was added. It is based on DAMNAME attribute information.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
These data are believed to be logically consistent, although not tested. Geometry appears topologically clean. Certain node/geometry and topology (GT)-polygon/chain relationships are collected or generated to satisfy topological requirements. Some of these requirements include: chains must begin and end at nodes, chains must connect to each other at nodes, chains do not extend through nodes, left and right GT-polygons are defined for each chain element and are consistent throughout the transfer, and the chains representing the limits of the file (neatline) are free of gaps. The neatline is generated by connecting the four corners of the digital file, as established during initialization of the digital file. All data outside the enclosed region are ignored and all data crossing these geographically straight lines are clipped at the neatline. (Exception: During the QA/QC process all data is examined and if errors are found and corrections are possible, then data is corrected accordingly. This process is documented in the Process_Step.) Data within a specified tolerance of the neatline are snapped to the neatline. Neatline straightening aligns the digitized edges of the digital data with the generated neatline, that is, with the longitude/latitude lines in geographic coordinates. All internal polygons are tested for closure. Certain attributes and/or entities, e.g. closure line, convey data quality information. When information to be encoded in the subfield is known to be not applicable (undefined, not relevant), then the subfield is valued by a string of 9s; and when the information to be encoded is relevant but unknown (or missing), then the subfield is valued by a string of 9s.
Completeness_Report:
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No test have been completed for exhaustiveness. Process_Description:
The process step describes, in general, the process used in the production of data sets. The originating agencies created the original spatial coverage. GeoPlan, during the QA/QC process included the following aspects: (1) Reprojected data to FGDL Albers (2) Set Precision to DOUBLE (3) Set Tolerances to FGDL Standards. (4) DESCRIPT item was added and based on DAMNAME (5) Source_Scale_Denominator was not defined in the original data layer. (6) Dropped extraneous items FIPSST FIPSCNTY STATENUM HUC2 HUC4 HUC6 STATE which were derived from existing items in table.
