- Abstract:
-
This dataset contains a sample of data from the 2004 and 2009 Florida Statistical Abstract by county for all Florida counties. Included in the sample population profile are: components of population change from April 1, 2000 to April 1, 2009; land area (2000) and population density for April 1, 2009; general population projections for 2010 through 2035 (from 2009 population profile); and population projections by age group for 2010 through 2030 (2003 population profile). In addition to this, this dataset also contains historical population data for each county dating back to 1830.
- Purpose:
-
To display spatial and attribute data of the
2004 Florida Statistical Abstract Population Profile
by county for all Florida counties,
in addition to USCB historical county-wide population data.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Note that the UND18_2010, A1864_2010, OVR65_2010, UND18_2030,
A1864_2030, and OVR65_2030 fields have not been updated. These
values represent data from the 2004 Florida Statistical Abstract document.
For updates of these values please refer to <http://www.bebr.ufl.edu/> for
ordering instructions.
Note: 1/ Natural increase is calculated as the difference between
the number of births and the number of deaths; net migration is calculated
as the difference between total population change and natural increase.
Vital statistics data for persons of unreported residence are included only
in the entries for the state. For this reason, natural increase and net
migration columns may not add to their state totals.
Census data has been revised.

Note: The medium projection is the one we believe is most likely to
provide an accurate forecast of future population. The high and low
projections indicate the range in which future populations are likely
to fall. They do not represent absolute limits to growth; for any county,
the future population may be above the high projection or below the
low projection. If future distributions of errors are similar to past
distributions, however, future populations will fall between high and
low projections in approximately two-thirds of Florida's counties. For a
detailed description of projection methodology, see the source.

1/ Land area figures represent the total area in the counties in 2000
and are not adjusted for lands which cannot be developed
(government-owned parks or reserves) or are uninhabitable
(swamps or marshes).

A note about data scale:
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.
1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.
Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

This data layer was originally created by the US Census Bureau.
The GeoPlan Center acquired this dataset from the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection GIS Division. This dataset was previously
released in FGDL Version 3 (released July 2000), and there was an
error in the eastern border of Polk County/ western border of Osceola.
The border has been corrected and updated for this new version of the
dataset.

- Process_Description:
-
The County boundary TIGER/Line file (cntbnd.shp) was enhanced at
the Geoplan Center by the addition/standardization of
attribute data from the two United States Census Bureau sources and
the 2004 Florida Statistical Abstract.
GeoPlan, during the QA/QC process included the following aspects:
-Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN
-Removed the [OBJECTID], [AREA], [PERIMETER], [FGDLCODE], [AUTOID],
[SHAPE_AREA], and [SHAPE_LEN] fields from the attribute table.
The field [FIPS] was then renamed [FIRST_FIPS].
GeoPlan then added the following fields: [1830], [1840], [1850], [1860],
[1870], [1880], [1890], [1900], [1910], [1920], [1930], [1940], [1950],
[1960], [1970], [1980], [1990], [2000].
These fields were then populated with the historical population
data for each county from the Census sources.
Present day Bradford County was assigned the 1860 population
data originally assigned to New River County. Also, present day
Brevard County was assigned the 1850 population data originally
assigned to St. Lucie County. Additionally, the 1830 population
data originally assigned to Santa Rosa County was assigned to
present day Santa Rosa County, although present day Santa Rosa
County was created in 1842.
-Extracted population projection attribute data from the 2004 Florida
Statistical Abstract Population profile. The attribute data was then
linked to TIGER/Line County boundary file. Components of Change
information is derived from the following table: Table 1.72.
COMPONENTS OF CHANGE: COMPONENTS OF POPULATION CHANGE IN THE COUNTIES
OF FLORIDA, APRIL 1, 2000 TO APRIL 1, 2003. Projections information is
derived from the following table: Table 1.41. PROJECTIONS: ESTIMATES,
APRIL 1, 2003, AND PROJECTIONS SPECIFIED YEARS APRIL 1, 2010 THROUGH
2030, IN THE COUNTIES OF FLORIDA. County Density information is derived
from the following table: Table 1.14. COUNTY RANKINGS AND DENSITY:
POPULATION ESTIMATES, RANK PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION, LAND AREA, AND
DENSITY IN THE COUNTIES OF FLORIDA, APRIL 1, 2003. Age Projections
information is derived from the following table: Table 1.54. AGE:
PROJECTIONS BY AGE GROUP IN THE COUNTIES OF FLORIDA, APRIL 1, 2010 AND
2030.
-Added a DESCRIPT field based on NAME (County name).
-Added FGDLAQDATE based on the date FGDL acquired the BEBR data.

On August 18th, 2010 GeoPlan Center obtained updated population
estimates and projections via email from Ive Irwin of BEBR. Excel tables
were provided that contained data included in the 2009 Florida Statistical
Abstract.
GeoPlan, during the QA/QC process performed the following tasks:
-Appended the attributes of CNTPOP_2004 to the newest county boundary
shapefile. This was done to obtain the most up to date county boundary
spatial features.
-Deleted redundant attributes.
-Removed POP_2003 field and replaced it with POP_2009
-Updated the population projection fields (low, medium and high)
-Added and populated the LOW_2035, MED_2035, and HIGH_2035
fields.
-Updated the NATURAL_NO, NATURAL_PC, NET_MIG_NO, and
NET_MIG_PC fields.
-Updated the FGDLAQDATE field to reflect the date GeoPlan acquired
the updated data from BEBR.

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees
about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check
with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.
Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'.
The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties
or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data
provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center
makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability
of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited
to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular
purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center
shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using,
modifying, contributing or distributing the materials.
