This dataset contains critical habitat (line) designated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for endangered or threatened species located within the State of Florida. When a species is proposed for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must consider whether there are areas of habitat believed to be essential the species conservation. Those areas may be proposed for designation as critical habitat. Critical habitat is a term defined and used in the Act. It is a specific geographic area(s) that contains features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and that may require special management and protection. Critical habitat may include an area that is not currently occupied by the species but that will be needed for its recovery. An area is designated as critical habitat after the Service publishes a proposed Federal regulation in the Federal Register and receives and considers public comments on the proposal. The final boundaries of the critical habitat are also published in the Federal Register.
Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. Federal agencies are required to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on actions they carry out, fund, or authorize to ensure that their actions will not destroy or adversely modify critical habitat. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers of the importance of these areas to the conservation of a listed species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.
All data were developed by FWS field offices. For data-specific questions, please refer to the individual shapefiles. No data alterations are made by ECOS. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service ECOS Environmental Conservation Online System https://ecos.fws.gov/ecp/report/table/critical-habitat.html This page contains the spatial data for active proposed and final critical habitat for FWS only and Joint FWS/NMFS threatened and endangered species. ECOS is a FWS-sponsored platform for FWS data. The ECOS critical habitat on-line mapper includes (some, not all of the) proposed and final critical habitat for species listed as Threatened and Endangered by the FWS, or that are jointly managed by FWS/NMFS. The on-line mapper does not include species which are under the sole jurisdiction of NMFS. Users who are interested in critical habitat for NMFS species are referred to the NMFS critical habitat Website, here: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/endangered-species-conservation/critical-habitat Important note Not all of the critical habitat data designated by the Fish & Wildlife Service is available from this portal. If you require critical habitat spatial data not available here, please contact the FWS Lead Region for that species Please see the following link for a zip file containing two shapefiles, one for lines, one for polygons, which aggregate all critical habitat shapes for all species. None The GIS files and their associated coordinates are not the legal source for determining the critical habitat boundaries of species described within this dataset. Inherent in any data set used to develop graphical representations, are limitations of accuracy as determined by, among others, the source, scale and resolution of the data. While the Service makes every effort to represent the critical habitat shown with this data as completely and accurately as possible (given existing time and resource constraints), the USFWS gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data. In addition, the USFWS shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein. Graphical representations provided by the use of this data do not represent a legal description of the critical habitat boundary. The user is referred to the critical habitat textual description in the appropriate final rule for this species as published in the Federal Register. These data are to be used only in the context of the definition and purpose of critical habitat. This primarily relates to Section 7 consultation under the Endangered Species Act. These data may be used for planning and land management purposes. They are not to be used for legal survey use.

The data found in this file were developed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service field offices. For more information please refer to the species level metadata found with the individual shapefiles. The ECOS Joint Development Team is responsible for creating and serving this conglomerate file. No data alterations are made by ECOS.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within the original data.
Polygon and chain-node topology are present. Every polygon has a label.
Features represented have not been tested for completeness
Data were collected using methods that have unknown accuracy (EPA National Geospatial Data Policy [NGDP] Accuracy Tier 10). For more information, please see EPA's NGDP at http://epa.gov/geospatial/policies.html
A formal accuracy assessment of the vertical positional information in the data set has either not been conducted, or is not applicable.
Spatial and Attribute Information
Data is acquired from field offices responsible for developing individual species shapefiles. The shapefiles are then merged to create this all layers shapefile. For development of individual species shapefiles, please refer to that individual species' metadata.
The GeoPlan Center downloaded the aggregate all critical habitat shapes for all species (polygon) dataset on October 16th, 2019 from the USFWS ECOS Website: ECOS Environmental Conservation Online System https://ecos.fws.gov/ecp/report/table/critical-habitat.html A zip file containing two shapefiles, one for lines, one for polygons, which aggregate all critical habitat shapes for all species. Updated: Aug 16, 2019 https://ecos-beta.fws.gov/docs/crithab/crithab_all/crithab_all_layers.zip CRITHAB_LINE.shp During the QA/QC process the following tasks were undertaken: - Select features that intersected the FL_Envelope_Buffer400m.shp, exported to CRITHAB_LINE_FL - Reprojected to FGDL Albers from GCS_WGS_1984 using the following transformation: WGS_1984_(ITRF00)_To_NAD_1983 + NAD_1983_To_HARN_Florida CRITHAB_LINE_FL_Albers - Clipped to the FL_Envelope_Buffer400m.shp CRITHAB_LINE_FL_Albers_Clip - Uppercased all records in the table (Except SCINAME). - Uppercased all field names - A DESCRIPT field was added based on COMNAME - A FGDLAQDATE field was added based on date downloaded from source. - Renamed to ch_usfws_line_aug19.shp - Updated Metadata.

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using, modifying, contributing or distributing the materials. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation.
