Abstract:

This dataset contains the locations of Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) roadkills within the state of Florida, maintained by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). In this shapefile, we used only those records maintained by the FWC from which we could obtain a geographic coordinate. This is an update to the FGDL layer bearrdkill_2009.

Purpose:

These data display the locations and the associated attributes of black bear roadkills in the state of Florida, from 1976 to 2010.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

The GIS analyst overlaid the remaining point locations onto current roads, counties, and imagery layers. We imported the completed roadkill dataset into ArcGIS (version 9.3, ESRI, Redlands, California) as a shapefile. Then, we assigned North American Datum 1983 as the datum for the latitude/longitude geographic coordinates. In part to evaluate the positional and attribute accuracy of the data, we overlaid the points onto both county and roads layers. Data that was not readily associated with a road was further examined by overlaying the data on top of 2006-2008 DOQQs. This step allowed us to search for unrecorded roads. When a location could not be visually confirmed, the record was eliminated. Some of the records were further eliminated for positional inaccuracies.

A note about data scale:
